Those truck universal shifters aren't that good. Try stepping up to the $200 one and shifting will be fine and not in the seat. My 292 was all tuned up, cap, plugs, wires, points, carb rebuild and running much better but still had a miss at idle. valve was bad.
These things when running right are like a sewing mahcine and smoother than a v8.
