351 V-6 in a pick-up.

I was out at the sod farm,which is a virtual rolling museum of old trucks,and this one guy next to me had another Custom Camper that looked just like mine(only restored!). So I was talking to him about it and he tells me it has the rare 351 V-6 option. I've heard of 305 V-6s in a Pick-up but never a 351.None of the literature I've seen ever mentioned this option except in a medium-duty truck. He wasn't too impressed with the gas mileage as I recall,and was thinking about switching to a 350. Has anybody else seen one of these?

yep. They were optional on the 1 tons, and i *THINK* 3/4 ton trucks up untill 70 or so.
GMC only, just like the 305

V-6's are pretty hard on fuel compared to a small block, atleast the one I have is compared to the SB's I've had. BUT, you give me an option of a 351 over a 350 SB, I'll take the V-6 any day of the week in a pickup.

90% of the time my V-6 is running its loaded, so that may explain the higher fuel consumption. That, and I pull the crap out of it on hills.

Thanks guys. Sounds like some kind of super durable torque monster. Anybody know the bore+stroke? Just curious.

Good link,thanks. I notice it (351E) makes 304 net ft.lbs. torque at 1600 RPM !

Good lord willing and the creeks don't rise, I'm picking up a 351 for my truck soon! Not sure if I'm just going to use the top end, or swap the whole thing. Would be an easier decision, but my 305 is part way through its rebuild already.

The 351 was available in '66, '67, and '68. It was basically replaced by the 396. The 305 was available until March of '69, so you will see a '69 GMC once in a while with a 305.

Yeah, them old V6's are torque monsters. I'm pulling mine for a 350 SBC, but down the road, I'll rebuild the 305 and put it back in. If you do get the 351, get and adapter made so you can put on a Holley 500 2bbl. Theres a night and day difference between the Holley and a Stromberg.

The 351 can get decent milage with the right gearing. I wouldn't hesitate to go with either an od tranny or 3.07 gears. We had a 69 2 ton flatbed that would get 12-14 on the highway. Don't know what the final gear ratio was, but it would run 100 mph. Pretty good milage for pushing a brick through the air.

I'm actually going to pursue a TBI setup. Why?... because I like to make things hard I guess!
As for gears, it's a 4x4, currently with 3.54's, but I'm looking for 3.73's, hopefully in newer diff's with disc front and open knuckle. The plan is that this isn't meant to be much of a highway cruiser. If I go with 16" tires like I want, I should be able to run about 80mph at 3500rpm, perfectly fine for getting me to the hills or around town.

Did have some pictures...............I think I lost them when I swapped puters because I can't find them. We farmed so they got used hard.........Actually, some of the weights we grossed rolling over the scales at the farm were downright abuse.
