Wheel bearing seal ?

I'm sure this is a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway. I have a 69 K20 with the axles off a 78. dana 44 on the front. I just changed the ball joints and wheel bearings and had the discs machined on the hubs. After I changed the inner bearing I put a new grease seal into the hub. As I remember from taking it apart, the face of the seal should be flush with the inner edge of the hub. Now my question: is there any trick to getting the step on the spindle into the grease seal ? I know the seal fits because I tested it before pressing it into the hub, and it must be a reasonably tight fit on the spindle otherwise it wouldn't seal, but after an hour of trying and destroying one seal, I can't make it happen
