Rust Proofing? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Quick question for you guys about rust proofing. I have a truck that has solid metal on it in the usual area's, rockers, corners, bottoms of the doors. The truck was a Cali truck and now its here in WA and its being exposed to our good ol' washington weather. I want to try and prevent any rust from happening in the usual area's. There are some holes I need to have filled at the body shop, until then I have some tape covering up the holes but I'm sure moisture is getting in. I know they make sprays but I'm wondering what you guys have done, like how to get rust proofing inside hard places.

I used to spray for a local rustproofing company in the Eighties.

Personally, I would never use a product like that on the underbody of my vehicle. It closes factory drain holes and makes future maintenance work difficult and messy.

I just keep my vehicles clean all winter long and have no real issues with rust

You will want to make sure everything is coated. Under coats and coatings like POR work well as long as the drains are not plugged. I would suggest cleaning out the cowl area, making sure the drains are clear and then install a screen to prevent leaves from entering the cowl. Make sure that the rocker drains and door drains are open, also.

I had a very nice 73 Ranchero ruined because the door drains were plugged by a company that did undercoating. It was not a product failure, it was an inept application.

Anthony - sorry, I just found this post. I think it's important to see how the water is getting into the truck. For example, the doors. I'd order new window felts and rubber to ensure water isn't getting into the doors thru the glass. And once the water is in, make sure the factory drain holes aren't clogged. You've got to be able to get the water out too. I don't know how things look on that truck, I always kept it covered and rain wasnt too much of a problem down here. For the underside, I'd look at POR 15. Hope this helps.

Thanks Devin, everything still looks great, but its been really rainy, I thought I would see what my options are, I am keeping a close eye on things.
