engine stand help.....

Need advice hanging engine on the stand. Does this look ok? I’ve tried to spread the fingers for a wider pattern but wont work with this home made stand.
Before I forget to ask, is the center plug the end of the cam, or is it a water jacket? I’m thinking of replacing the freeze plugs and not sure about that one.

Re: engine stand help.....

I usually mount using the two bottom holes, and the two towards the top (directly behind the heads), as it allows the plate to be centered on the engine.
sorry don't have a picture.

I mount to the engine while it's on the floor, as it makes adjustment easier, then use my hoist to lift it onto the stand.

hope that helps

Re: engine stand help.....

just remember to put nuts and washers on in that first photo.

When you get freeze plugs, hose out the water jackets real good... shove your finger in there and see if you can pull out a ton of sludge, then get brass plugs, they cost a lot more, but, they won't rust. I normally paint the block and then install the plugs, bives a more professional appearance.

That’s what I wanted to do but, it’s not possible with the plate I have. Do you think it will be ok?

Re: engine stand help.....

this might also be a good time to replace the drain plugs with radiator petcocks. it makes draining and flushing later much easier.

Don’t call it small! It’s thicker than yours! lol
I know, what you mean. But it’s a barrowed stand. I’m sort of torn on what to do. How much are stands?

Re: engine stand help.....

swing the two bottom ones below the crank

move the two you have in the middle to the top outter holes and try that..

this way your holding from the top and bottom getting max strength

Re: engine stand help.....

Hey I was just searching the forms to see how guys bolt there engines to the stand. I about ready to put mine on the stand but I didn’t think four 3/8 bolts would hold all that weight up. I figured that would be a lot of sheer stress on the bolts and they would brake off. But it guess none of you have had your engine hit the floor so it must work

Re: engine stand help.....

Heres the way mine got bolted on.
The stand costed about 50 bucks.
I put the wood on the front because I don´t trust the thing.
We bought it with 2 feet and changed it to 1 later because it is easier to get the engine lift over it.

Re: engine stand help.....

I prefer the stands with 2 legs. Had an engine mounted to high, and when I went to turn it over to work on the bottom end, the whole thing turned over onto the floor. Haven't used a one legged stand in 20 yrs.

Re: engine stand help.....

I turned mine upside down to replace the rear main but I didn´t have the heads on it either.
I wouldn´t even dream about turning the engine upside down with the heads on.
Pretty sure if I did that it would fall over too.
I stil have the other 2 legs if I need them.

Re: engine stand help.....

I've never had one fall over when turning it over with the heads on, but it is definately hard to turn back upright. Get a friend to help you & it shouldn't be a big deal to spin it.
