Electric Fuel Pump Install
Got me a Holley "Blue" electric fuel pump yesterday. Where do you guys have yours mounted? I was thinking on the inside of the frame near where the mechanical pump was. Pictures are most definitely welcome! Also, are yall using any type of emergency shut-off for your pumps, if so what kind? Holley has a shut off switch that operates off of oil pressure. So, no pressure, no pumping.
Thanks guys. |

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
I would think you would want it mounted as close to the tank as possible.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
i mounted mine on the outside of the frame rail on the passenger side it sits just a tad forward of where the door handle is. electric pumps need to be as close to the tank as possible. underhood is not a good place for them the heat will kill it. you also want to keep it away from exhaust. electric pumps push a lot better than they pull which is why you want it close to the tank.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
Generally electric pumps push better than they pull so the closer to the tank the better.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
I got to looking and it is too tall to fit inside the frame. Didn't think about the heat or keeping it close to the tank, so I guess it works out anyway. I will check out the frame under the cab after lunch. I'm trying to get this thing finished up before spring break is over and I have to head back to school. Guess we'll see what happens....
Thanks for the help and keep the tips/suggestions coming! |

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
we do this on dodge diesels often...they have a carter pick up pump mounted on the fire wall....BAD PLACE...they are pusher pumps and not designed to pull...so they have alot of trouble with them...you can still put it on the frame just take you a small piece of flat metal and either bend the edges or tack it to the top and bottom of the frame. Then mount the pump to this plate...works well..most of the replacements for the dodge trucks won't fit within the frame. If you can do it, use aluminum, it will act as a heat sink for the pump as well...hope this helps but put it close to the tank is the main thing, and keep it cool.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
Any recommendations on filter location, or do you strictly rely on the filter in the carb?

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
Definatley put a filter BEFORE your pump. Most pump manufacturers won't even warranty one if there wasn't a "pre-filter" installed. I always use one after too, just in case.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
I just hooked my red holley fuel pump( The one for carbs) and I mounted mine on the outside of the frame rail since it it a little to tight on the wire to put it in side the frame rail . It is a little above level with the bottom of the frame and it is a couple inches in front or my rear cab mount . The filter is right after the metal line comes out of the floor of the cab. It sucks not having my camera right now but it is what it is.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
Has anyone had problems running the higher gpm types?
Maybe that is why one quit on me - it may have been working against itself - I did not have any type of pressure switch on it or anything. Bill in SD

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
the holley blue pumps come with a regulator for a couple dollars more than the red pump and is definately not a fuel injection pump it is a carb pump.fuel injection pumps are usually around 50 psi or so aside from gm tbi which is about 15 psi. i have been running a blue pump for a couple years with no issues you just have to set the pressure with a regulator.as stated put a filter in front of the pump so a lot of trash doesnt get in there. the pumps have a brass screen inside but they clog very easily so you need a pre filter.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
The instructions that came with the pump said to run a screen filter before the pump and a high quality filter after the pump. Also, I got the one with the regulator, so I will adjust my pressure accordingly. What is a good pressure to adjust the regulator to? I have a pressure gage on my fuel lines for the carb.
I think I am going to mount my pump on the inside of the frame rail, passenger side. It will be right below the area where the fuel line from the tank runs down to the frame rail. I don't guess I can get it much closer unless I put it in the cab. I figure it will be better protected from road debris being on the inside. But, do you guys think it will get too hot being on the inside with potentially less air flow? |

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
I'd run the pressure between 5-7 PSI. Heat shouldn't be a problem as long as it isn't too close to the exhaust.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
I started to put mine inside the frame rail but mine would have been a really tight fit and with the wires on the top pinched between frame and pump I was worried that mabe vibrations could wear thew the wires and ground out my fuel pump. mabe I am being over nervious but to late now I got it all hooked up now.

Re: Electric Fuel Pump Install
Previous owner had one and it crapped out...I replaced it with a cheaper one and mounted where the old one was, on the inside frame under the cab. The only other thing I did was add a toggle switch.
