I'm involved with the 17 & 18 year old young men in my church. Tuesday I had them over to show them how to change the brake shoes in my Jimmy. Not too involved, just jack it up, pull the wheel, drum and shoes, put new ones on. Only one of them had ever been involved in a brake job before.

While I was doing this, I noticed the wheel cylinder was frozen, so tonight I got my son out and we put new cylinders on both rear brakes along with a new drum. With that brake not working, no wonder it would throw you all over the road when you tried to stop.

Kids today have a lot more going on than when I grew up, but most all of them have a love for cars and trucks. If you can keep their attention for 30 minutes and show them a skill they it really gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Now if you could put all the wrenching lessons in a video game the younguns would be all over that!!!!!

I got young men hanging around my garage all the time watching me, makes me feel young again. Kinda wish I'd had an ole codjer to hang around when I was young.

Pay it forward! It's how the hotrodding thing started, guys doing and other guys watching. Jesse James learned how to work with metal by working with Boyd Ciddington, and other metal masters. It's good to hear. I live in the sticks so no real chance of doing it here except with my own kids, and maybe their friends as they get older (My boys are 5 & 6) so no cars yet, but quads and the like. Soon, my wife dreds the day, but soon they'll be my little wrench fetching monkeys!!

There is a song by the Kingston Trio (yes I'm really dating myself) called Desert Pete. I won't recite the lyrics, but basically it has a great message about benefiting from others actions that preceded you and what you should do for those that follow.

i had my son out under my cars and four wheel drives when he was 10 yrs old by the time he was 11 he knew all his sockets, wrenchs,screw drivers.and could tell a 9/16 headed bolt from a 1/2 headed bolt.

Hey yah maybe my kids could get into that with the blood from the knuckles and throwin wrenches!

Very cool, Low 'n slow that you are makin a difference with some young lives, and giving yourself a feeling of accomplishment too! Don't get no better than that!

my son is 14 now, our '52 build is all him. while i was in iraq and a-stan 2 ot of 3 years he did everything at home, all the oil changes you name it. the '52 was his christmas present.... ny attempt to keep him out of trouble
