Newbie with New pics and questions!!

Well, I am a new guy here as of this weekend. I inherited a 1969 c10 LWB 2WD 3 on the tree, that my great grandpa bought brand new and has been sitting at my great uncles house for the last 10 years or more.

I went down there and got it fired up and running in less than 3 hours. New oil, coolant, battery and fuel and it was good to go! Got to get the brakes set and it should be ready for the road. I also got a Haynes Manual on ebay so I will begin the fun.

Some questions:
1. I know I have an I6 but which one is it? Any tips?

2. What is a good parts catalogue. I know I need a tailgate already.

3. It has a 3 on the tree and I have no clue what type of fluid to drain and refill it?

4. The bench seat is shot and it has a pretty cool looking cover on it. Any sites that have good bench seat covers for the c10?

5. Any other info that you guys can provide would be a huge help. Like what else I need to do to it to get it running in decent shape.

Here are some pics of it!!

Thanks in advance guys!

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

Welcome from Utah!

Here's some answers:

1) Look at the side covers on the engine-if they are like 6" tall, 292 and 4" tall, most likely a 250. The 292 motor mounts will be off set from each other, too

2) You've found the best parts cat.

3) Good old 90 wt. gear oil

5) See number 2

Looks like a good project truck.

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

Welcome from another (almost) new guy. I's either a 250 or a 292. Somebody else will tell you which one. Is there a list of options in the glove box? You put standard gear lube( 80-90 ) in the trans.
>>One note of caution: Those old tires that have been sitting in one spot for all those years could be trouble and I would at least get some newer used or new tires.Don't take it on the freeway with those things on there and really check out the brakes too. Have fun.

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

Nice score! Probably running 250 I6, take pic of passenger side engine and also if motor mounts are straight across from each other its 250. Other possible is 292. If your wanting new repro parts then check with some of the board vendors, otherwise hang out here and watch for all the parts posts.
Check this out for seat covers http://www.ricksupholstery.com/ they are awesome. Just call and they can do whatever you want for way cheap. They do custom for price of generics basically. Otherwise just make sure tires are good, brakes, steering linkages, just main stuff and drive it!

Here's some good sites for ya http://www.stovebolt.com/
http://www.inliners.org/
Do lots of searches here and go to the faq section and browse also. There are a lot of good guys here that help us.

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

for your tailgate and seatcover in a few weeks theres the autofair at lowes speedway just go with stacks of cash and you'll find all sorts of stuff/plus you can get an idea of the numerous venders in your area to get parts from in the future// better to buy local with no shipping

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

jeep guy.howdy from Greensboro.Do check your wheel cylinders they are almost 40 years old and have been sitting way to long. There are plenty of vendors on this site that will have the parts you need.Get the LMC Catalog, their prices are high but their catalog is a great resource for figuring out what you need and where stuff goes.I think they cancelled the spring meet at the fairgrounds but if not PM me with the dates.I really like that show and there are usually some parts there.I will be going to Charlotte. The dates are April 12-15.Search for Charlotte Auto Fair for more info.

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi! Click on the Vendors link in my sig for a list of board supporting vendors. They are active on the boards and quick and easy to communicate with (which is a big advantage in my eyes). Not to mention Tim Christian is in your part of the world and he's a great guy to shoot the breeze with as well as do business with.

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

Thanks guys. Your help has been great so far. PanelDeland I will surely be at the Charlotte show.

What do you guys think about the tranny issue? It is a 3 on the tree. What type is this. It is all stock. What type of fluid to I refill it with? A few said 80-90W gear oil and I just wanted to make sure this was agreeable.

Also does anyone have any seat covers that might be worth mentioning?

Also what type of rear end do these trucks have?

I will surely check to see where my engine mounts are and how I can ID the inline type. Thanks again.

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

Jeep guy, let me give you a little advise. Hold onto that truck! I let three of these trucks get away and regret every one of them! With that said, these guys who posted before me pretty much answered your questions. You will not find more useful advise than what you'll find here! Even if you're a seasoned pro!! I hope you will stick around...

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

The rear ratio is likely a 3.73 with the 6/3spd combo.

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

Welcome!Your motor is most likely a 250.That was the standard 6cyl.A 292 was optional and would have an emblem under the C/10 emblem. It would be listed on the VIN-spec sheet on the glovebox door. The 250 motor mounts are directly opposed and the 292s are offset from one another.
Looks like a decent start.Enjoy

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

Welcome from Charlotte JeepGuy! I just took my tranny out to paint and I drained and filled it with 75-90w gear oil. My tranny used to be on the tree but I am converting it to the floor. Anyways, you've come to the right place these guys together are more knowledgeable than a rocket scientist. Not to mention the are very nice and helpful. Good luck with your truck!

Re: Newbie and need some big time help!

Thanks for the info so far guys.

Are there any websites that have all of the OEM specs for these trucks. Like the engines, tranny, and axle ratios for the stock trucks? Just curious to find out what all my truck has from 69'.

Thanks again. I will surely be in Charlotte for the show getting tons of parts and such.

New pics!

Hey guys
Went down and work on the truck again this weekend. I got it out of the barn and drove it around about 2 miles and it was actually running well! I also found out that it is the 250 (I6). I also have a Haynes manual on the way from ebay so that will surely help me out. Here are a few more pics of it and alot of questions.

1. Where can I get the OEM replacement windshield wipers. Not the whole thing but the actually metal blade and rubber blade combo. Advanced and AutoZone had nothing on them.

2. I have the 3spd tranny and I noticed that there was a fill plug on the passenger side of the tranny but I could not locate the drain plug. Is there a drain that I can find or what?

3. I broke the dome light cover that is in the cab. The entire thing was shot and it shattered when I tried to remove it. Is there a replacement assembly that I can buy.

4. I have noticed guys keeping saying to buy from the vendors on here, but I can not find any. Is there a C10 parts catalog that I can order so I can see the parts. I use Quadratec for my Jeep and that seems to work well.

Here are the pics and thanks for all the help guys.

250 here!

Thanks again.
