Help, Broke Both Axles

I need help. I just broke both axles on the passanger side front dana 44 [closed knuckle 68 3/4]. i need to know if the axles are the same on 1/2ton as a 3/4 ton closed knuckle.
Another ? what year did they stop putting the closed knuckle in these trucks? thanks for any help.

`69 for closed knuckles.I think they`re the same.Just different at the spindles-out.This sucks. So,you want to keep it original? You prolly know it`s easier to go newer at this point. So you broke the shafts and the housing`s ok?Did the knuckle grenade and your yokes got trashed?Or,both shafts actually broke? Are you into it,yet?

Re: Help, Broke Both Axles

PM Americanrider. He may,and I say may,be able to help. You could post a thread in the 67-72 message board asking if there`s a good source for these to check.Don`t word it as a want to buy, though. And,ask that it not be moved back over hear as you need to reach all you can asap and it`s as much 67-72 as it is 4wd related.I wish I could help. They`re going to have to come out of another un-used axle.Would you consider swapping to newer? If not just temporary?

Re: Help, Broke Both Axles

If i up date to a disc front end it seems like a straight forward swap. But how about the drive shaft. [ i got a t-221 transfercase].Also if i use a 73/up diff, is it still just a bolt in?

Re: Help, Broke Both Axles

Its bolt in the only thing you may need to change is the break lines. I used an axle from an 84 whrn I did my swap.

Re: Help, Broke Both Axles

unless you are just wanting to keep it origanal I would just put the newer axle in it. If you can get one from a 72 so you can have the flat top knuckles incase you ever want crossover steering.

Re: Help, Broke Both Axles

You can swap-in a newer axle and search your rare parts in the meantime to go back original,if you want.
If your going to a disc brake axle, you`ll have to address the rest of the front brake system, too.

Actually,it's hit and miss on the knuckles,I've had axles as late as 77 that had the flat knuckle on the passenger side.

Make sure your new one is the same gear ratio as your old one.

Re: Help, Broke Both Axles

Cool,I just found out about a`68 K/20 for sale for $1,500.Bed rough, but rest of body good and a fresh-built 383($2,500 in reciepts).I thought about you needing an axle.I`d have bought it for the motor and parted the rest.
Glad you`re set.
