Check with you local DVM, here in California all we have to is get the Vin Number verified by the Highway Patrol or at the DMV if the car has not been registered in 5 or more years (if the vin comes back clean). There are companies out there that you pay them a fee and they attain a title in there state and send it to you. Then you use that title to get you title in state. That always smelled fishy to me so I just go to the DMV myself and find out what they need.

Run the vehicle in the local news paper for at least four weeks as an "abandoned vehicle" then take the paper work to the DVM. Done DEAL!

Every state is different. You will need to check with your local DMV for the answer. Here in Ga. once the title is gone on an old one..ITS DONE. Even those "buy a title" companies cant get a title for some states and my state is one of them!!!!

[will work ing cali]since its pretty old its probably off the records which means they have no idea who owned it be fore you came to them. ask for a dupilcate title and give them all your info and the vin# now its yours. then sell it to your self if you want to get a new non-duplicate title.

Re: No Title? HELP! ASAP! How can I get one?
thanks for all the replys, but Florida is a real stickler when it comes to these things. DMV/tag/tax office, all tell me I must have a title to get a title transfered to my name or prove ownership by showing vehicle registeration. Bill of sale is no good. Already had VIN ran and nothing comes back. At a dead end of what to do next?

Re: No Title? HELP! ASAP! How can I get one?
I have a few suggestions for you. If it were mine, I would contact the seller and ask for more help. If he can tell you who had it before him you may be able to track down the previous registered owner. If you can get to that guy he can request a duplicate title to replace the lost one and then transfer it to you. My Dad did this once and it was simple once the last registered owner was found.
My second idea (if that fails) is to get a trusted party out of state to present the bill of sale to thier local DMV and follow the process for thier state. (I would recommend a close state as Arizona requires an inspection to make sure the VIN has not been altered.) If you can aquire an out of state title then it would be as simple as an out of state title transfer from whoever you had get the title. These are just my thoughts if I were in your shoes, I hope it is helpful.

Re: No Title? HELP! ASAP! How can I get one?
The seller of my truck went through the process of filing for an abandoned vehicle title. He then trasnferred that tiltle over to me. Took about 6-8 weeks.

Did you end up with a clear title or a bonded title. I as going to do that for one of mine until it said it would be a bonded title for 3 years. A bonded title is when you put up a bond against the title ($100 insurnace policy) and if no one claims it as theirs in that time you get a clear title. but if thats not the case I'lll try it. |

talk to one of the local shops that build old cars and trucks they may be able to help. google "title service" they usually charge $150 bucks and it's done in around 6-8 weeks.

A buddy of mine had a similar situation and bought 2 similar vehichles. One he purchased for parts and title, the other as the build vehicle. The DMV never knew the difference. Not legal, but what they don't know never hurts them. Just my .02

Re: No Title? HELP! ASAP! How can I get one?
sell it (in theory) to a friend or board member in another state that does not have a title law. Then have that friend sell it back. States with title laws have to honor states with no title laws. there is normally a form that has to be signed over.
For every rule there are 3 leagal ways around it!!!! |
