Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

the 292 and 250 make just about the same horspower not much difference there but its the torque of the 292 which makes it a workhorse. the main problem is that it was an option inline and it was bad on gas because of all the grunt. i too had a 250 with less than 50,000 miles on it and gave it to my brother to put in his suburban and i went with a 350 and now i want the suburban so i can have the engine back.

Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

I personally have no experiance with the I6's but, I have hear my dad at least 100 time talk about his 66 pickup with a 250 smoke a good many SBC in short red light to red light runs. That coming from a true SBC fan.

Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

I don't know if you still can, but up until at least a few years ago you could still buy brand new, not rebuilt 292's from Chevy. Seems that a lot of them went into UPS trucks, and they were still used in Mexico.

Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

I'm picking up my redone head for my 292 in 30m. Plan on putting it on sunday. Small fortune in it. every int/ex valve replaced, all seats changed for unleaded, springs I"m going to have $350 in this dang thing. but if it runs like a timex its worth it.

I am still trying to get my 292 to start. Thats another story. Just not sure how much money to keep putting into it before I pull the whole thing.

Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

If it its getting fuel and fire it should start up. check to make sure its getting spark, and look to see if its getting fuel, if its getting both and not starting check your timing, make sure your rotor is turning.
Rained yesterday so I didnt get my done. It looks pretty all chevy orange though.

I'm getting about 12.5 city with my 292. And it's got a hopped up cam and bigger intake valves, 4 Bbl [500 cfm] Edelbrock, Offy intake and Clifford headers.

Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

I've seen them in trucks on ebay and they were saying 14mpg. I don't think the difference between the 2 is a lot. You know like you talk with people who had a well tuned 454 that got more mpg than a worn out 350.

Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

Keeping my 292 even though I have a late model 305 roller cam lying in parts truck. Have the head at local speed shop, went in for a cleaning but ended up getting screw-in rocker studs, guide plates, new valves and springs. Thinking about roller rockers??? Anyone know anything about these?

Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

Nothing wrong with either 6. I wish at times I had kept my 250 insted of going with the 350. For one it would be running right now.

Re: 292 or 250 what to choose

Just got my 292 fired up last night!! after the new valve job. Its so smooth now. It sounds completely different too. Next weekend I think I'll put my HEI in it.
I had to turn the idle way down from where it had been. The motor takes a lot less effort to run now.
