64 Tranny Upgrade

Hey,

I've searched, but haven't found the info I'm looking for..

I want to upgrade my Powerglide to a 350 or anything that would be easiest and cheapest. I know 350 turbos are pretty common and cheap. I would like a bolt-on option, it that's even possible.

Currently, I have a 350 engine pushing a Powerglide.

Anyone have a step-by-step guide and/or the options? or a link??

Thanks,
Elias

Re: 64 Tranny Upgrade

your good to go mayn. I just did the swap on my 65' and its awesome! even converted over to a Gennie Shifter too so no more coloum duty! If you had one of the older powerglides (pre 60's) then you would need to get an adaptor plate but Im sure you dont so it will be a bolt on affair for you. What motor do you have?

Re: 64 Tranny Upgrade

I have a '78 350 engine in there right now..

So, it'll bolt up to the cross member too with out issue??

Re-sizing the drive shaft is not a big issue, I just want to know ahead of time so I know what I'm in for.

Re: 64 Tranny Upgrade

I see you are in Socal...
If you don't want to deal with the drive shaft you could take it down to Oceanside Driveline (760) 439-9719. They did the exact change (powerglide to 350) on my '62 for the previous owner.
They picked up the fully reconditioned chevy t-350 6" auto trans @ at Gallat's Truck Salvage 760-433-4112 for about 400 bucks back in '03. I belive they also go a crossmember there, but I'm not sure.
I have been using my truck for commuting for over 1 year and a weekend ride before that. I just got a leak a week ago and am fixing it now. (speedo connection, previous user install error). The previos owner did the install so it probably hooks up pretty easily, he wasn't a NASA engineer...

Hope this helps...

-Matt

Re: 64 Tranny Upgrade

I haven't actually used the Powerglide crossmember with a TH350, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. You'll just have to move it back and drill some new holes. I usually use the 67 & up auto crossmembers. And of course you'll have to have your driveshaft shortened since the TH350 is longer than a PG
