LSD, and Posi options

Hey guys

In the next few months I will be in the market for a posi unit

The rear end in my truck is really starting to whine, and I am going to be doing a complete overhaul, and throwing in a posi

The truck will be mainly used for a Daily driver, occasional towing(3-4 times a year), winter driving.....very little off road use. I want something smooth, and automatic....no electronic stuff

I am torn between the clutch, and torsional gear type.......I like the idea of the torsional gear type, and it not wearing out, unlike the clutch type. I take really good care of my truck, and diffs are cleaned and drained every 50,000kms, so maintence is not an issue. I am just looking for something smooth, and easy to drive with

Just wondering what you guys have in, or have heard good/bad about
Any opinions are welcome....I have never had a Posi, and don't know **** about how they feel in the truck

Thanks
Cameron

Re: LSD, and Posi options

I was also looking at this

http://www.drivetrain.com/4x4.html
14 Bolt Custom Rearend Differential

But I have 2.76 gears, and they don't offer this....but it would be nice to upgrade to a 14 bolt, I know the 10 bolts are weak

Re: LSD, and Posi options

I have an Eaton but I've only had it for about a month. It feels the same as the stock open unit, but with the 3.42's it gets upto speed much sooner.

Re: LSD, and Posi options

Unless you exceed tire size (>33"), I'd try the Detroit Tru-Trac. It is clutchless.

I just bought a set of 1 ton axles for my truck, the rear is a 14 bolt gov-loc, but am wary of it. For the 35" tires I will be running, I would prefer the Eaton posi.

Probably some 285/75/16 Toyo m/t's on my stock rims coming up.

Re: LSD, and Posi options

If you are going with a LSD, I would go with the Eaton or the Torsion. I personally wouldn't recommend an Auburn, by design the eat their casing and explode.

I was looking at the Detroit Tru-trac one, and I am liking it

there is no special oil required, because it doesn't use clutchs
and there is nothing to wear out.........I like that

I am still debating up grading the rear-end, or keeping the 10 bolt....what do you guys think?. I don't burn tires, and will only be running a max of 32-33" tires in the future. No heavy off roading, or extreme towing.....just a car trailer 3 times a year

If you're talking about swapping to a 12bolt, then I would say I wouldn't waste my time. The 10 is plent strong for your intended purpose.

Re: LSD, and Posi options

I've been told that when they start popping in the turns that it's time to add some LIMITED SLIP ADDITIVE. It's just a small bottle.

Re: LSD, and Posi options

Sometimes you can feel them locking and unlocking in a turn if you're going just the right speed and just the right turning angle which is pretty normal. A loud pop though wouldn't be good.
