Truck running funny

71 GMC 350 - Finally got my mechanic to fix the brakes and pack a wheel bearing. So with the weather being nice, I decided to go cruzing while completing some errands. Since I'm used to driving a 93 GMC Vanudra, I think I may have pushed it too hard. Speedometer read 80, GPS said 70. When I got off the turnpike, IT started acting funny, cutting off at the traffic lights. Then when I got to my destination, it cuts off. I restart, idles fine, put in drive, and cuts off again, start it again, put in drive cuts off again. I mamange to get it into a parking space, go do my business come back 20 minutes later, and It's running fine. Any thoughts, ideas?

Re: Truck running funny

Does it sputter or just die? While it stay running if you give it gas while holding the brake and shifting? Is it HEI or points?

Re: Truck running funny

Have your local parts store check the control modue for ya. They do funny things some times. I know it should not have any thing to do with the tranny but it controls many aspects of the ignition at different engine speeds. So if your idle drops when you put your truck in gear it could be the moduel. If you are not running an HEI I have not a clue as I have verry little experience with points. RJ22

Just a wild guess, maybe vapor locked? Check your fuel line and see if its close to a heat source.

Re: Truck running funny

I've heard of torque converters doing this before maybe you should check fluid level and make sure your trans fluid is not low or overheating Good Luck though

Does your tranny draw vacuum off your intake??? If so could be a vacuum leak. Just a guess.

Re: Truck running funny

I would check the mechanical advance in the distributor sounds like it stuck full advance and then released after it stopped for awhile.

Re: Truck running funny

Check the fuel line and it's proximity to heat sources. Mine did the exact same thing a few years back, had to reroute the fuel line and filter away from the rad hoses.

Re: Truck running funny

Definately operating temp related.I suspect carburation or torque converter.Could be vacuum or fuel/air.Doesn`t sound major.
