rear end help

i want to swap out my rear end in my 64 swb with a 5 lug rear end just wondering if a 1/2 ton rear end out of a 85 p/u would work and about how much one would be any help

That newer rearend is going to be wider than your 64 rear end. So that is going to limit you to how wide of wheels you can run without a deep offset. It can be done, but of course you'll have to cut off all the mounts on the 85 rear end and weld the trailing arm mounts to it.

I just changed my 65 rearend I used a 71 rearend direct bolt in

I forgot to say the 71 72 rearend is 3/4 inch wider on each side this helped me for I run 20 inch tires.

so the axles are longer right but the 3rd member is still the same correct

It's gonna be at least as wide as the 71-72 rear, so 1 1/2" or more, I don't remember exactly and I don't currently have one to measure for ya.

No, the 84 rear end is a 8.5 10 bolt instead of a 12 bolt. The last year for a 12 bolt in a truck was 79 I believe.

thats what I meant a 62 12 bolt and a 71 are the same so I could get one and put my 4.11 in it since I have a 700r4 in the truck

To the best of my knowledge 63 was the first year for the 12 bolt. As long as the gears you have are for a pickup 12 bolt, yes they will fit in a 71 pickup 12 bolt.

right on cause I scored a front suspension off an 85 for 20 bucks and some 3 inch drop springs for 50 so the rear will need done before too long
