Timing light will not flash

Just had a distributer problem that you guys helped me fix (thank you!!), and I grabbed my timing light to set the timing. No flash from the timing light, and I figured my ancient timing light just finally decided to die. Picked up a new Craftsman light and the same thing, no flash... nothing at all. Both are induction lights.

I pulled the number one plug and checked for spark, sparks ok. I checked to make sure that I had the battery leads attached correctly, they were. Also moved the induction pickup up and down the #1 wire.

Any idea why I can not get my timing light to flash?

Re: Timing light will not flash

My light has an arrow on the inductive pickup that says, toward the spark plug. If it isn't that way it won"t flash. It also has a small switch on the housing that has to be pressed for it to work. Have you tried it on a different vehicle?

Re: Timing light will not flash

Some days I worry about me...

Tested it with my 78 C-30 (thanks VetteVet), worked perfectly. Went back to the 67 C-10 and now it works... Either I have lost what few marbles I had left, or that light was trying to bug me!

Thanks!

I heard that. My also ancient Craftsman (Penske) light used to do that from time to time. Drove me nuts. It finally became the victim of an acute throw-down fit, and got replaced by one from the AAP store two blocks down the street. I guess 30 years is all you can expect from a $25 timing light.
