GM crate 330 HO
Who has a 330 HO in their truck? How do you like it? My 383 project is going to take to long to build. I need my truck. Graduate school is taking up all of my free time. The 383 will be on hold until later. In the mean time, the roller block will age nicely for the rebuild.
I've been looking at the 350 HO as a simple drop in project. Swap the cam, add a Air Gap Intake, carb, fuel and distributor. The engine could be dropped in less than 2 days with preparation. |

Re: GM crate 330 HO
I looked at the 350 HO when I was doing research for my motor swap. It's a great bang for the buck motor. If your considering doing upgrades to it then I suggest looking at the Fast Burn 385.

Re: GM crate 330 HO
A buddy and i droped a ZZ3 in a '55 Chevy 2 door and it's pretty much the same engine and that car is about as heavy as our trucks and that sucker ran like a raped date.
Im with ken if your allready gonna drop the cash spend a l'il more and go for the 385 and if you do you probably wont even want to finish your 383 build up engine. Good luck and let us know what you do. |

Re: GM crate 330 HO
it is a damn good bang for the buck, but could you not pick up a 5.3/4l60e drivetrian and drop that in...a few more wires and a little different fuel setup. Around here you can put up a 5.3 drivetrain for 1500 or so. Worst case carburate it. It will save you money over ther 350/330hp crate.

Re: GM crate 330 HO
A friend has one in his 94 extended cab, with TBI. That truck gets up and moves pretty good for being an extended cab.

Re: GM crate 330 HO
I paid $1200 bucks for my crate 350 from GM at the local GM Dealership that was only 2 years ago. Change the CAM and do the rest that you already mentioned and you have a good running little motor.

Re: GM crate 330 HO
Yea, I'm looking at the SD 330 HO http://www.sdparts.com/product/12486...eAssembly.aspx
My brother's company in Lubbock may be able to get one at near cost or below web price. I've considered looking for a low milage 96 or newer motor. I just need to get my truck running for now. The temporary motor is a way for me to do some modifications while putting in. The tricky part will be the dual ram air intake from a 81-82 bumper. |

gchemist- Get your best advertised internet price, then make Summit match it. They were doing free shipping which puts them way below anyone out there. Trust me when I say I researched till me eyes bled on my Ramjet and Summit was the best deal by far.

Re: GM crate 330 HO
Seems like anytime you don't put exactly what came out of the engine bay back in, there is going to be some degree of nickel and diming on cost that happens that adds up real quick. Even just switching to a 1 piece main seal late model vortec block and a high rise intake cost and headers took time and money for a new starter to match the new flexplate, new dipstick, new throttle return spring setup, having to fabricate spacers for the A/C brackets, etc. Minor things I know but they did add some extra time and a little extra cost to the swap.
The 330HO shouldn't be too tough though. |

Make sure you compare others to the deal your brother can get. A good friend of mne is a GM mechanic locally, and his dealership wanted about $750 more at his cost. That deal was no deal at all... Slonaker |

Re: GM crate 330 HO
I have that engine in my Studebaker. Almost 7000 miles and no problems. With the built turbo 350 from Summit, it impresses people. I'd buy one again.

Re: GM crate 330 HO
I have one. It's been in my LWB 2 wheel drive and ran great and now it's in my SWB 4X4. Hauls that truck any where it needs to go.
