69 Longhorn, yes the 500 was through 1976, the 425 was available 1977-1979. The 1976 was available with EFI.
Also one should note the Horsepower rating System was changed from gross to net in 1972. This is the reason for the charts lower power Ratings. The only real loss of power came from the lowering of compression in 1970. Even that wasn't much the 500s compression for example was lowered from 10.0:1 to 8.5:1 The result was a loss about 35 hp and 15 ft pounds of torque. So don't let the lower stated ratings fool you the engine in the later models is the same engine!! The large chamber 120 cc heads are the better choice for low end torque and performance. These heads will produce more torque in the 1000-4000 RPM range than the 76 cc heads. When building a low end grunt engine the 120 cc head would be your best choice. What's the difference between a 472" and a 500" ? A: Just the crankshaft and the pistons. The 500" has a 4.300" stroke, while the 472" is 4.060". The compression height (the distance between wristpin centerline and the piston top) is about .110" higher on a 472". Anybody want to suggest what it is going to cost to get a Chevy big block or small block to perform at these levels? Don't take me wrong I love my Chevy small blocks, I use them in my Jeeps and my stock SWB trucks. |

The cad is an awsome mill, you get no arguement here! I also agree that the lower comp didnt hurt them much. I went back to smallblock chevs,as they are more affordable to build. Pretty much anything thats BB will cost a little more.....the Olds wasnt cheap to build, but there is something about that BB tork.....Yee Haw!........69

Re: how much(junkyard cadillac)??
Ben,
The 429's belhousing pattern is from the old caddy family, and different than the 472/500s afaik. Very pricey engine to refurbish too. The car should have a switch pitch TH400 in it though. The innards could be swapped into another TH400 case if you wanted to use the switch pitch stuff in something else. Dave rs86 [/i] today in the repairable lot of the local junkyard i saw a 66ish Cadillac Coupe Deville 2dr hardtop. it looks really nice from what i saw. if it has been wrecked it is light and all in the very back. do any of you know any about these?? i did some research and the standard engine in them was a 429. man it is a cool lookin car. any advice about what its worth or what to look for on it?? thanks,Ben [/QUOTE] |

longhornmail,
'64 to '67 caddys buicks and olds' TH400s have them. The '64-'67 caddy and '64 to '66 buicks [401 and 425"] have odd belhousing patterns. The others have the B/O/P pattern. Btw - the 13" s-p convertor stalls apx 1200/2500, and the 12" convertor from the buick and olds '64-'67 s-p two speeds drops right into the s-p TH400s and stalls 2000/3000. note - the pontiac 2 speed, the chevy p-glide and the pontiac and chevy TH-400 all were never offered w/the s-p feature. Easiest way to id one is look for the slpines on the pump. The splines on the s-p trannys are 1/2 as long as a normal pump's splines. They also have two terminals on the detent connector, but beware that not all "two wire" trannys are s-p. Look for the short splines to be sure. You can swap the s-p parts into a non s-p case [a chevy too] if you need to....but, the later TH400 cases with a lesser number of pump to case bolt holes will not accept the s-p innards. I can remember off hand how many bolts the early and late cases have at the front pump...... Dave [/i] Hmmmm, i would LOVE to get my hands ona good switch pitch set up. Those things are awsome! Would never find one here in a junk yard...and even if I did...there's no $$ in the budget.
I'm lucky to get a whole tank of gas every week. |
