i guess there's a reason why yall are the experts. the blazer started running crappy again to i checked the plugs and sure enough....one of them was wet and smelled like gas...the others had a bunch of carbon dust/buildup and i'm getting backfires and black smoke. soooo.....where do i go from here?

I'd start with ignition.

You might consider an complete tune up, plugs/wires/cap/rotor at the very least.
Check the coil too.

What's you set up?
Do you already have H.E.I. already?

Have you done a compression check yet?

Now the fun begins.

HEI yes, compression check no and i'm getting new wires soon. my brother seems to think that the carb needs to be tuned. something about it running rich, not getting enough air to ignite the gas.

Yep, that's on the list too.

A compression test should be done, it'll tell you where your really at.

If compression is good in all 8, then it's only a matter of figuring out the fuel & spark.

You'll have to catch me on an evening when I don't have anything going on and i'll come over to run a compression check and i'll check to see how much vacuum your engine pulls and get it dialed in right. Hold off on the cap and rotor for now and just do the wires. Since you have never messed with HEI before let me or terry help you out with that since there is a few wires to mess with. Well also tell you what else to replace on the distributor.

You can always put your hand on the exhaust manifold,shortly, it will tell you if that cylinder is firing....just a thought

From the Haynes manual.

Carbon Deposits = Dry sooty deposits indicate a rich mixture or weak ignition causing backfires, hard starting, and hesitation.

Recomendation = Make sure the plug has the correct heat range. Check for clogged air filter, problem in the fuel system, or engine management system. Also check for ignition system problems.
