Re: interpreting 1951 VIN number

Got a picture of the passenger side of the engine? If it's a 216, the lifter cover extends ot the top of the head.

Best way I know is to find the casting number on the side of the block, usually around the starter. It will be raised letters, not that hard to find with a scraper. Some are behind the starter. The go to www.inliners.org and look under casting numbers. There also some links for more numbers, one goes to Bulters A1. Go to the bottom of that page and click on the Chevy logo for more.
