Caprice 5.7 and trans swap ?

I just came across a really good deal for a 1990 5.7 TBI caprice engine and 700r4 trans. I was originally just going to buy the transmission, but now I'm thinking about using both. I know there's a member on here who's done the same swap. Of course I would love to have a new 5.3 or LS engine, but I'm a broke college student with a part time job.
Is this a good idea or should I look for something else? Maybe the LT1? Any input appreciated.
