Poor Mans Power Streering?? Is there such a thing?

I know on the '56 Bel Air there is a kit that you can replace all the steering bushings with bearings, kinda a poor mans power steering. Is there such a thing for these trucks? I have manual steering and don't really mind it except in parking lots and slow drivind in Houston. Thanks guys!

HMMM! I see humor is prevelant tonight. I thought I would use the linkage off the Super Rare 3 door Hercules Suburban. Not that the Hercules Package is that rare, just the fact that it is an "OH MY GOSH" 3 door Suburban!! How amazingly rare!

Get a Power steering box, arm, and rag joint from a 68 to 87 C10/C20 (preferably pre 80 to stay away from metric lines). Get the pump/pulleys/brackets from the same vehicle and you have stock GM power steering

Yes there is such a thing as "poor man's power steering". It's called "junkyardin". As Bill said go find a complete used setup and put it on. No fabbing required. Can find it complete for under $50 to $150 normally around here.

tI've seen the bearing things you're talkin about, the early corvette guys get them... they cost WAY more than you'd be willing to pay, and you certianly wouldn't call it a poor man's set up... unless you would be refering to AFTER you paid for them.

Also, the bearings wouldn't do much, the effort from manual steering is that you are turning the tire on pavement with the truck's weight on top of it, hence why it gets easier with speed.

Head over to the gym and that'll be poor man's power steering.

Re: Poor Mans Power Streering?? Is there such a thing?

I'd be careful to make sure that a gearbox from a 67-72 is used and nothing else! The gearbox in one of my other trucks is from a 73-87 and the steering is too strong. Shouldn't even drive on the freeway.

the gear box wouldn't do that, the pump probably has a broken pressure relief spring.

Re: Poor Mans Power Streering?? Is there such a thing?

I have the box and pump off a '75. I had to trim the front bumper bracket to clear the box, but other than that, it was a bolt on upgrade.

Re: Poor Mans Power Streering?? Is there such a thing?

I want one of those to match my dice (or die?) shift knob.

Those make driving fun, I delivered a customer's 80s Lincoln with one and enjoyed it, as well as running them on tractors and such.

What's with hatin' the manual steering? It's just less stuff to break, and is fine going down the road.
