Shortening a long bed
Has anyone ever shortened a long bed to a short bed on a 63 chevy truck? A friend of has the truck and told me about his idea. The plan was to use an 83 chevy 4x4 shortbed diesel and mount the body of the 63 on the frame of the 83 short bed. Nothing is going tohappen anytime soon, I was just wondering. Thanks!

Re: Shortening a long bed
it is alot of work.. I believe you have to cut the bed from the front and the rear although I may be wrong about that. But you will have to cut a section out for sure and reweld it back in smooth it out and then body filler. If you cut it wrong it can look real bad or be a PITA to get right... You might want to try looking for a short bed first and use that as a last resort...

Re: Shortening a long bed
I've been considering chopping off the back end if each of my sb bed sides and weld on some from a long bed. The back of my sb bed sides are trashed but the front part of them are perfect(must have been rear ended before i got it). I talked to many people about it, but i got shot down every time. The article you linked to sparked my interest and i think ill go a head and give it a shot. Please keep this post updated with info. I think this is one of the only choices some people have when a good shortbed fleetside isn't available.

Re: Shortening a long bed
I had thought of it myself. If I can find a good left side I might concider it... My right side is pretty nice but the left is pretty thrashed..

Re: Shortening a long bed
I did a 67-72 bed that way and have a set of 60-66 long bed sides I am going to do the same to. 60-66 should be, if anything, easier because all the horizontal body lines are parallel unlike 67-72. Take 12" in front of the rear wheel and 8" behind. Here are some pics of the 67-72 I did:

Re: Shortening a long bed
Wow! I would mess up a good pair of bedsides if I did that. Nice work!!

Re: Shortening a long bed
Well those weren't exactly a "good" pair of bedsides to start with, so I felt I didn't have much to lose
