Steering coupler (rag joint) Splines???

I picked up a new steering coupler for my truck (converting to power steering) and noticed that the coupler does not have any splines, it's perfectly smooth inside...
Does that sound right?

I know power steering doesn't require much effort, but what's to keep it from slipping and not turning the input shaft (which is splined BTW).

It just doesn't seem right.

I've never seen one that wasn't splined.

Re: Steering coupler (rag joint) Splines???

ok, it turns out that one section has splines (less than a 1/4 of the inner radius) and the rest is completely smooth.

Still doesn't seem right to me...

Re: Steering coupler (rag joint) Splines???

Brak,
I just changed my 67 over to power steering that came out of a 78 and everything was splined. My column was out of a 87 van and it was splined also. I put the old rag joint on the gear box and used the old double d shaft cut to measure to a borgeson knuckle to the column.
