This pulley thing can make you pull your hair out, for sure.... Are you sure the crank pulley isn't on backwards? Is the groove centered on the pulley or is it offset? It sounds like you might have to find a different crank pulley. Not much help but at least it's a bump to the top!

Re: bbc help

I think you should go to a serpentine setup.

When you figure out the parts to use, let me know. I've got a 396 that wants one.

Seriously, are you eyeballing it or did you line everything up with a straight edge and see that the problem really is the crank pully? I've had paralax error send me down the wrong path before.

Re: bbc help

yeah im for sure i got the crank pulley on the right way and i know for sure its a big block pulley just not sure what year i have so many spare parts its not funny the crank pulley is definetly thse problem anyone have specs on short and long water pump

serpentine would be nice but brackets are to bulky and i don't wanna use a/c i just put a march pulleys kit on a 67 with a 496 sweet setup but very expensive.

Re: bbc help

I'd lay a long straightedge across the front of the crank pulley and "Point" to every other pulley, measuring how far mis-matched each one is.

If it's just the alternator that's out of line, then perhaps new brackets or washers/shims can line it up. If everything's in line except the crank pulley, then you may have to swap out the crank pulley.

Good luck.

Re: bbc help

I would also check to see if the balancer is on all of the way.

Re: bbc help

I kept tossing the alt belt also and then it would sometimes take out the PS belt. I checked everything and almost went crazy. I found that when I replaced the water pump for a Edelbrock i found that both pumps sitting on the bench they were different heights?? the original was a GM. I put the new Aluminum one on and it was better. Then I was looking at a 78 Burb at my buddy's with a big block and noticed that where the Alt bracket bolts to the intake there is a bolt stud. A bolt that has the same threads on the bottom as on the top. So off to the wreckers i went and found a couple. Pulled the bracket, pulled the intake bolt, Installed the new bolt/stud, reinstalled the bracket, and a nut on top to hold my new chrome alternator bracket. Problem solved. Hope this helps. I doesn't take much to throw it off. And I followed the same path as you, remove balancer, reinstall to make sure its all the way on, change pulleys, make sure they were BB, new aluminum pulleys. As you can see in the pic the Alt is out before I put the new bolt in

Re: bbc help

well im starting to believe its not the crank pulley giving me a problem i think its got to do with the water pump i know for a fact that my crank pulley, water pump pulley, alt and bracket, and powersteering pump and pulley came off a 73 chevy pick up but this big block i have came with a water pump on it with a balancer. my power steering and crank line up fine the water pump measures 7 inches but its not sticking out far enough to line up

I used one of these behind the water pump pulley on my 454.

Re: bbc help
