Overdrive Trans

Found a 67 truck in the yard today that had an overdrive transmission listed on its SPID. Tranny was gone, but there was a cable below the dash w/ "overdrive" placard around it. Never seen this before, just thought I would share. May not be any big deal. This truck also had an option that read something like "GM Air Inj Reactor"...What is this?

I'll go back and get pics next week, if wanted.

Re: Overdrive Trans

Yeah, it through me for a loop, too. I was in a hurry to get to work or I would've gone back to get the camera. I'm glad the glove box was still in the cab floor. Is there a "rare" or hard to find steering wheel cap for these (67-68)?

Re: Overdrive Trans

I don't need one, just saw one in the floor of the same truck. Looked very nice. Were there 2 different styles maybe?

Re: Overdrive Trans

the overdrive was a very weak tranny offered on the smaller engines. If I recall, it wasn't even strong enough to hold up to the little 327. They worked fine, and there's stillsome on the road today. They also came in cars of the late 60's too.
The air injection thing was very common in the late 70's up to the mid 90s or so... a smog pump would shoot air in the exhaust to help with emissions.
that horn button is a valuable piece if in good shape. A 67 only item, it was part of the CST package.

Re: Overdrive Trans

Okay, so not that big of a deal on the OD thing...The horn cap did have glass or hard plastic in the center of if it. Looked pretty good.

Could someone find a pic of that cap? I'd love to see what it looks like!

Re: Overdrive Trans

The overdrives were pretty common in the late 50's and 60's especially in cars, but also found in trucks till they found out they coudn't stand up to normal truck use.

My Dad used to drive a 72 SWB w/ a 250 and a manual three speed column shift. He put an overdrive trans in it to lower the RPM's on the freeway. You could pull the cable under the dash to lock the trans from going into overdrive (like for towing). You shift through the three gears as usual, and when you were cruising along in third, you let up on the gas pedal and the trans would shift itself into overdrive. When you were cruising along in OD you could stomp the pedal and it would shift back to 3rd so you had a passing gear of sorts.

He would have to replace them every couple of years because they would tear up. He really was not hard on them either.

Edit about the air injector:

That is the emissions smog pump is it not?

Re: Overdrive Trans

Now are these automatic overdrives or the 3 speeds with an overdrive solenoid?

. I'm sure you meant to type "late 60's up to...". My last '69 had the air pump and injectors because it was a 1/2 ton. Current 3/4 didn't have to have them. Talking California here.

Re: Overdrive Trans

The o/d trans was a manual 3spd w/manual solenoid. This was about the last application on a`67.
That sounds like the CST horn cap and if the plastic is good it`s a hot little part.Heck,if you can get the glovebox door for cheap,I think JoesJunk would like to have that.

Re: Overdrive Trans

Plastic was crystal clear and chrome was not very pitted at all. Both cap and glove door were sitting in the cab floor. Don't know that all of the goodies underneath the cap were there, though.

Wow,this is a new one on me. It seems like a good idea but it sounds like it was from the parts bin of a car line and not designed for truck duty. I'd like to find out more about this option.

Re: Overdrive Trans

They were mostly in cars.
Just the horncap is all you need. The rest is the same and most would have that. Those parts are also available in repro.I wouldn`t say it`s ultra-valueable,but they should sell it cheap,Id think, and someone would want it here.I`m sure.

Re: Overdrive Trans

I thought one of those was beside the normal booring horn cap... the normal one is like silver with black writing on it... looks very lame beside either of these two.
