Motor Mounts
Putting 496BB in my truck 1972 C/10 4x4. Can I use the small block mounts or do I need to buy the big block mounts. Will 73 and up bb mounts work?

The mounts and towers are differant, Not sure about 73 but prob will work

you need big ones, but there are two styles of bb mount sin 68-72, the 68-71 look like modified normal sb ones and the 72 ones are almost identical to 73-up ones, you can use 73-up ones, the 73-up ones differ by roughly 1.2" of length fromt he sb ones, but you will have exhaust manifold issues possibly, but maybe not on BB engines, someone else will know that

Thanks, So I still use my towers and just change the mounts. I just ordered my headers today. Motor should be ready next week.

Can someone answer me why when I look at the 68-72 chevys at truck shows I have notice there is no rhyme or reason to me why some of the motor mounts are about 3 in closer to the radiator then others. My boys is way back and the dist is right up against the firewall. Thanks Ed ke6bnl

If your smallblock is mounted on 6/250 stands,it will be close to the firewall. this has been on some for ease of installation(to save hunting drive line parts),or for weight transfer. The V8 stands set the eng closer to the radiator(2wd).....69 longhorn.

Don't order your mounts yet! Your truck is a 4x4, right? GM never put big blocks in 4x4s until '73 so the only mounts available are the small block ones. Ask other board memberrs who have big blocks in their 4x4 how they did it. Firewall clearances, headers, and clutch linkage are BIG considerations.

You can mount the motor on the small block mounts but you will not like it. They are barely strong enough for a small block and will break the first time you get down on that 496. Your best bet for a bolt in would be some 72 mounts as they were the strongest big block mounts for these year trucks. If you don't mind a little fab work the 73 up are made very similar to the 72 mounts,so you could "make" them work,it all depends all your fabracation skills. GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the infor on the motormount location, I believe you are right on. I thing the vin number shows that this truck had a 6 cyl. in it at one time that would be the reason for the mount location and as you sy they did not want to change out some of the parts. Ed,iused 6/250 stands on my V8 truck to move a little weight back......unless you are having trouble with dist clearance,or doing a "correct resto",I wouldnt worry about where it is located.........69longhorn.

His truck is a 4x4. Small blocks and sixes were mounted in the same location. As far back as possible. This was done in order to maximize the length of the front driveline in order to minimize the driveline angles.

Oldyellers truck is a 4x4,but I didnt see anything about Ed,s truck being a 4x4........that is the truck I was refering to. If it is a 4x4.......you are right on MikeC.......the 4x4s did mount the smallblock in same as 6 cyl position........69 longhorn.
