Engine Harness w/ HEI & Shorty Starter
I'm installing an American Autowire Engine harness on my 350 w/ HEI. I came across a "head-scratcher". I have one of the after-market hi-torque shorty starters. Currently I only have a purple wire and the + battery cable attached to the starter. The wires on the American Autowire harness to the starter are purple and yellow. What do i do with the extra yellow wire? Also- on the HEI terminal, there is a thick pink wire and a yellow wire terminated in the same clip. I assume the thick pink is carrying juice from the bulkhead. What is the yellow wire doing? The factory package says it is the correct HEI harness- so i don;t think it was a part mix-up. So- Should I just clip the yellow wire to the starter and only attach the purple? Also- My '71 has a mechanical oil pressure gauge. They included a plug for what i think is an oil sender (dark blue). I assume I should snip this off. I don;t have a sender for an idiot-light, do I? I only have the mechanical gauge? Thanks Folks- |

yes, the yellow wire is for a points style distributor, i just went though all this a couple months ago. and someone else might chime in but im 99% sure that you dont need that dark blue wire if your running a mechanical gauge.

Yup, I've got the same harness also. I don't know why they kept the yellow wire with the HEI upgrade. The oil light wire could go away if the eng harness specified gauges or no gauges. But it seems like a good quality harness and I've had no problems with it, just the 2 extra wires.

Thanks for the info. I'll give them the snip and install. I'm real happy with the quality of the American Autowire harness. I previously installed the AC harness- no surprises.
