Back glass quandry on my '71.

As some of you know, one of the panes on my rear slider was shot out a week ago by some punks. Since they also shot out 110 others, the local glass shop is booked up for a few weeks, and till he looks at my window, he is not sure if that pane can be replaced (doesn't look like it can to me). So, I am looking at rear windows. Now my dilemma, I like having the slider for ventilation, so I am leaning that direction, but the ones I have found so far are black framed (mine is aluminum, unfinished). If I do have to replace it, I think the black might look better, so not a problem, just have to decide about tint. Now, here is what I would like to ask of all of you, or specifically those that have done it:

1. I assume I should get a new gasket/seal also, and I have the custom trim, so how difficult is it to install? Or should I just have the glass shop do it and be protected against screw-ups (I'm perfectly capable of screwing something up )?

2. Since I had the truck painted several years ago, and they did not remove the back glass, am I going to run into any problems using a different gasket?

3. Does anyone have any installation horror stories, or tips that may help or keep me from screwing up (see 1. above)?

4. I would like to see some pics of black framed back sliders to help me decide between that option or going back to the original full glass if possible also.

Did they catch the morons that shot out all the windows?

We reuse the seals if they are in good condition and not hard. The back window is not too bad to remove and replace if you have a helper.

The paint line may show but it should not be a problem with fitup.

We have not run into any problems installing the back windows.

I have not run into any sliders that could not have the glass panes replaced once they are removed from the truck.

Yeah, they caught 5 of them, not sure if there are more or not, the cops are supposedly questioning them. Actually, someone turned them in, because the cops, as usual, were keeping up their surveilance of the local bars, where all crimes are evidently initiated and commited. And those kids (3 were 18-19, 2 were juviniles) knew where they were, it's common knowledge around here.

Thanks Jim, the paint line is my main worry if a change is required. That is just the kind of pic I needed too. Appreciate the info.

You shouldnt have to pull the window to put in a new piece of glass.There should be a strip of plastic top and bottom that snaps out and lets you remove the endcap on glass usually a slide then twist. The delimia is getting an exact fit on the new glass without a template.
