need help making an offer on a truck...

Ok, I went and looked at a '71 Cheyenne 2wd longbox... Box sides need work, metal floor is very nice, wrecked front right fender & hood, he wants to keep the un-original 350 motor, will have Th350 still in it. Seat wasted, non-tilt, non-tach... Very dirty, like farm truck dirty... Factory leaf-spring rear Chevrolet long-box truck. The grille and grille surround are hammered as well as front bumper, but rad support is good (if not I have a good A/C support)... was running vehicle when parked 5-6 years ago... thats how complete it is, less the damage and dirt, did I say dirty...? very dirty.
Ok, here's the positives...
Rust Free factory AC cab, I do mean RUST FREE cab and doors, doors close like new... few AC pieces missing (center outlet (broke), hoses under hood gone, compressor gone). inner fenderwells are perfect, no rust. P/S, P/B complete... let's see... interior would need total replacement...
I'm telling ya... replace front right fender and hood, repair boxsides, new front windshield and cab rubber and interior,... as well as serious cleaning and basics, i.e... brakes looked at, etc... were talking great rust free start...

So, what should I offer him...$$$...?

I was thinking about a future project of: convert to shortbox (have short-wide box already), serious cleaning, put a motor back in it, I have a good/usable fender & hood... and have a great '71 Shortwide starting point for future rebuild... But, I don't really need another project right now...

Re: need help making an offer on a truck...

.......hmmmm...... pic's would help but, I say price as you see fit for the good parts you listed and not as a truck and you would be real close. Cab, doors, ect. ect. Leaf spring rear trucks sell for less IMO also. You also have to gauge what the seller thinks he has too. That being said I say 500 to 600 tops but like I said seeing it would be much better.
BTW I paid 600 for a running driveing swb fleet but it is a rust bucket that needs all sheet metal and cab replacement. Just thought I would try to help. RJ22

Re: need help making an offer on a truck...

Thats why I'm so torn here... I drove My below mentioned 67 CST A/C truck home for $600.00 back in '98... but it too is rusty...
Just cab wise... this truck is almost perfect... I would say that it is, but there has to be something somewhere not perfect... the cab supports are solid, even the flaps on the back of the cab by the frame are straight...
So, lets just say, rust free A/C low hump '71 cab and perfect doors, complete... column, gauges, brake booster, etc... What's that worth?
My thought was to cut off the longbox leafs and put shortbox coils on it anyway... then we'll say the inner fender wells, 4 row radiator, and trans w/ linkage are bonuses...

Re: need help making an offer on a truck...

I personally would love to have a truck like that for the parts you mentioned and little to no rust as explained. So YES I still say same as above being sight unseen 500 to 600 to start maybe even alittle more cause you make the cab and doors sound so good you should be a salesman. But I think its working against you here the idea is too pay as little as possible right? RJ22

Re: need help making an offer on a truck...

He's asking $1000.00, no motor... but then says... "work on me alittle, what do you have I need"... he talked about keep the front suspension... whoopy, I'll give him a different one, either 71-72 or 73-79... I have both...
I was thinking about the same thing,... offer him $400.00. let him keep the motor (non-orig. anyway) take him a front suspension, and take him back the cut off rear half of frame (leaf sprung 3.08 non-posi)... I end up with a cab forward rust free future project with A/C, w/ no motor, that needs a pass. fender, hood, grille, grille surround, and bumper...
Ok, thanks so much for your input... I just needed to bounce it off of someone...

Re: need help making an offer on a truck...

Sounds like a good deal to me. Glade I could assist. Maybe some others will chime in but, IMO It sounds like you would be getting some pretty sound parts for the price. Hope it works out. RJ22

Re: need help making an offer on a truck...

When you say rust free cab, I am very sceptical. Not that it doesn't look rust free, but when you get to cleaning & pressure-washing, you almost ALWAYS punch through rocker panels and cab mount supports. Just something to keep in mind that I have seen doing frame-off jobs.

Re: need help making an offer on a truck...

I'm with you... I feel what your saying... especially here in South Dakota... I could not believe what I was seeing... you know how the inside of the back-bottom edge of the door is at least discolored? this is the same solid color as the outside or anywhere else, I wonder if I was drooling, hmmmmmm...
nicest I've ever seen... truly can't find anything bad on the cab or doors.
