BEST way to remove vinyl paint

I need to remove some vinyl paint from some vinyl door panels and other vinyl parts.

What's the best way to do that?

Eastwood says use lacquer thinner...well that does not work too well...what does?

Thanks.

Re: BEST way to remove vinyl paint

Are you sure they are vinyl and have paint on them?

I was going to say thinner also, it works great.

Might have to use alot more and really get the area wet with it to soften the paint. if that doesn't rub the color of the paint off on the rag then there's no paint on them or something. Anytime you use thinner you should see the paints color on the rag, unless it's clear, or it's made that color like molded plastics or whatever.

Re: BEST way to remove vinyl paint

I used lacquer thinner on mine.. it wook alot of elbow greese but it did get it done for the most part. It worked best if I let it sit on there for a little bit first.

It took me about an hour per panel to strip these with laquer thinner.

Re: BEST way to remove vinyl paint

I did the same thing and had the same results. The issue is the parts are really not clean. The pix posted by N2TRUX is a perfect example. Red paint was removed from blue panels leaving a sort of pink cast to the blue panel because the lacquer thinner does not remove all the paint. I'd like to find something that will remove ALL of the paint.

Thanks.

You may have to dye them again to get them the right color.

Re: BEST way to remove vinyl paint

Hmm I've always had great luck with thinner, It's always removed everything for me, I might use alot of it and go through a few rags, once they get the paint on them then they'll streak(sp?) and leave trails of the paint your are wiping off on what you rub them againist.

Only other thing I could think of would be aircraft paint stripper or something.

I've never had any luck with any paint stripper, I've always ended up sanding the paint off what I could.

Re: BEST way to remove vinyl paint

best bet would be to redye them again after you strip them. Make sure to use the prep stuff first, then dye. It's the only way you'll get it to look perfect.

I wouldn't recommend aircraft stripper on these - it's too caustic.

Re: BEST way to remove vinyl paint

You will absolutely need to dye them. Mine were totally clean when done, but they did have a dull finish. Here is what they look like now.

Re: BEST way to remove vinyl paint

Armor all wouldn't shine them back up?

I would have just dyed them instead of stripping them anyways, but I know it's better to remove the old before putting on new.
