Leaf rear vs. Coil Rear

What's the advantages of either vs. the disadvantages of the other.

I currently have a leaf rear end, and see a lot of people swapping to a coil rear and I don't really understand why.

When you don't know, ask.

I know leaf's are good for hauling, but I am not into a lot of heavy hauling.
I am not going super low, so that's not a big deal. But I do want something that rides and handles nice, so what's going to be my best and most affordable route?

Thanks.

Re: Leaf rear vs. Coil Rear

In my opinion, it is easier to drop a truck with trailing arms and coils.

Leaf springs are supposed to haul better (I don't haul anything, so I can't say for sure)

I like the handling of the trailing arms, whether they are stock or lowered.

Good luck, Rg

I wouldn't go to all the trouble of swapping from one to another just to lower it some. You can lower quite a bit with leafs, flipping the axle even for getting it lower. Coil trucks do handle better and actually seem to handle heavier loads better, but leafs are easier and cheaper to maintain.

I have been driving a 4th Gen. Camaro for the past 6 years while my truck rested in the garage pretty much. Needless to say, I wouldn't mind improving it a little in the area of handling.

The only resaon I can see on swapping Leaf to Trailing Arms is if you were going to bag the truck. If you just want a lower stance, I would keep the leaf set up.

Re: Leaf rear vs. Coil Rear

For some other ideas check "LFD's Low buck truck build". I have done the rear flip with my leafs and have now added bags for hauling. It is lowered 4.5/6-7. I have not finished it yet due to customer builds but it will be back on the road in a wek or two.

Where would be the best place to get drop leaf springs?

Re: Leaf rear vs. Coil Rear

I have been looking at Early Classic.
There are others, but I have used them for several things in the past, and just really am satisfied with their products.

Is that you dalton, if so go with the trailing arms, you will be a ton happier. You know that is what is under the back of the yellow truck.

Re: Leaf rear vs. Coil Rear

I can't speak for a short box ride, but my 68 long bed with leafs rides and handles very nice. My dad says that it rides better than a caddy and that with the bed empty. I like the leafs for the easy exaust routing and how simple it is. My truck is stock in the back except for removing the extra over load springs that were on top.
