cam for stock 305?

okay, after reading about all this power that can be made out of the little things in the other thread, i think i've decided to add some performance parts. after a while...

i'll probably get a holley 650 and performer rpm intake.

i'll also be replacing my exhuast with some shortie headers and possibly some aero-chambers(everyone at school is starting to get flows)

so what would a good cam be for a 305.

truck has 2.73 gears now, but it will have 3.73 gears down the road.

oh, and also a larger torque converter

305 with 8:1 compression, 650 holley, RPM intake, shortie headers, stock heads. Id say comp xe262 or similer is the biggest Id go unitl you either up the compression or the heads, or preferably both.

i wouldn't even go that big. from memory i think the duration is 218/222 at .05, or somewhere close to that. that is a decent amount of duration, even more than the zz4 cam. i would personaly not put a cam in it. but if you must i would go high lift/short duration. alot of duration is the opposite of what you want with those gears and low compression. i've got the 262 in my 350 and it really dosent' have much low end pull, due to my 3.08's and low compression. thats why the 64cc iron eagles and 3.55's are going in in a few weeks.

I'm positive it would be.

After reading your subject I was going to reccommend the XE262. But someone beat me to it!

If it was me, i'd put an Eddie 600 on it, yes on the Performer RPM, and yes on the 262. All of which can be bolted up to a 350 later on.

Good luck and have some fun!

All i'll say is "keep the Holley for the race car."

Eddies are VERY easy to work on and tune, and i'm sure you won't be adjusting it or messing with the idle screws everyweek.

And you'll help your MPG with the Edelbrock too.

Holleys are for power. If all you want is power and not milage/reliability/ease then get the holley. As for using these parts for a 350, WHY? A 383 is so easy, and a 400 is even easier. Small cubes are great for high rpm motors in little cars, not trucks.

i havent decided what engine i'm gonna put in yet.

its either a toss up between a 350 crate engine(either like daves or brandons) or building up my own 383 or 406

but i dont know what i'm gonna do yet

Well, I don't go along with this statement. I love my 350. To me, it's exactly what I want. Big blocks are great engines, or bigger cube small blocks, but 350 ci engines are fantastic too.

The number one thing wrong with any engine that has power in trucks is traction, or lack of. They can be made to have traction of course, but at the cost of ride quality. At some point in time you have to make up your mind on which one you want the most.

Almost exactly!

What about the older 283's and 327's in trucks, and the big boat Impalas and such.

They do just fine. Of course it might be best to put a bigger engine under the hood. But its not needed.

Whats wrong with 350's now Tom? What about that Vortec 350 you've got? You need more now. :p

i'm just stating my expireance. duration plus low compression = a slug. you realy don't need a cam in your 305 that has more duration than the zz4 cam which is making 355hp/400tq. your not gonna gain anything from that extra duration except moving the rpm band up higher, which is the opposite of what you want to do with a truck and with factory heads that aren't even gonna flow that well at higher rpm's. 3.73 would be a must IMO if your gonna use that cam in yur 305.
