nothing wrong there , just put some silicone glue on the pan and the gasket and let it dry overnight then install it , it will stay leak free for years , if you put it on before the glue dries it just sqeezes out the sides and will leak as soon as you put oil in it ,,,

I dont like the 4 pc gaskets, leak prone. i use the 1piece gasket. What you have is normal it will compress when installed.

just put glue on the gasket and the pan and also some on the block push the gasket into the wet glue and then let it sit overnight the glue will dry then you can install it and because the glue will be dry it won't sqeeze out ,
I have built 250's 283's 327's 350's 400's this way and it won't leak , you can do the intake manifold the same way , the key is to let the glue dry ,

another way is to attach the oilpan without those rubber insert's and just finger start the bolt's then squirt the opening's full of glue let it dry overnight then tighten it up , this way to will be leak proof

Should I let the glue on the block dry overnight too before I put the pan back on?

gearheads been using the 4 pc pan gaskets for years and they do take a little trial and error to get leak free. The 1pc is more forgiving but for double the price.

Good tip 19673ontree, since you can't get a 1 piece for a 292.

I used the 4 piece Felpro gaskets plus silly cone on my recent 454 build. Spent hours trying to stop the leaks once the engine cranked up.

Do yourself a favor. Use a 1-piece gasket. I will be from now on.
