Please Help! Drill bit broke off inside engine block.
I've got a 305 block that was made somewhere between 80-85(that is as specific as I could get from the casting numbers). The oil pressure sensor was stuck in the block and I could not get it to screw out. I even broke an easy out trying to get it to. So I decided to drill it out. When I made it all the way through with the drill bit it broke off inside the block. I already the engine completely together and getting ready to put it in, just needed to remove old sensor and install new one. So I removed everything down to and including the heads and oil pan and I can see no way to get into the galley in which the drill bit broke off into. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Thanks in advance.

Is the bit stuck in the hole or dropped down in the hole?

If it's stuck then it might be a new part of you engine forever, oil pressure is overated anyway!

It dropped down inside the whole and i cant find anyway inside there to get it out. Magnet on a string might work except that I doubt that I could get it to come back out straight and the piece that broke off is longer than the hole is wide but thanks for at least trying keep thinking I really am concerned that my block may now be toast because of a 1/2 inch long piece of drill bit.

you know one of my helicopters had to make an emergency landing in Bosnia due to "chips" in the transmission. Guess what they found stuck on the chip detector once they landed.... a 2 inch piece of broken drill bit!
Good luck

Some tool and die shops have a machine that can remove hardened drill bits by melting them with out hurting the surrounding cast. Might want to check into that. It isn't cheap considering the bits (electrode) are about 40 bucks a piece. Seen it once remove a broken tap out of a piece of tooling.
If you can get a chisel to it try tapping it until it breaks into smaller pieces then use a small mag. to retrieve it. I have done this to broken drill bits. It is a pain but better than ruing your motor. Just my .02 worth. Last edited by BarryB; 04-15-2007 at 10:39 PM. |

Re: Help! Drill bit broke off inside engine block.Iv
I once dropped a nut into a carb when I was a teenager. Being a teenager- I decided to open the throttle plates to see where it went. Not a good idea.
The great thing about being 16 and not knowing any better is no solution is off limits. I took off the carb (didn't see the nut anywhere) and rigged a shop-vac with a smaller hose I could run into the intakes (straight four) I didn't think it worked- until i checked the canister- and there it was. It's a long shot- but you never know... |

I can think of but one way to get it out. pull transmission and timing cover. remove the pipe plug at each end of the galley and use a blow gun to force it out the back.
good luck, dont give up. |

I think that hole is under the main cap.

If you take the oil pump off and the rear main cap theres a plug in one of the holes along side of the crank journal. One side the oil pump drive sleve gose through the other side has the plug. Just run along punch through the hole you drilled in the top and drive the plug out and the bit will be there. Then you will have to reinstall a new plug.
