Doors

the doors on our 87 are pretty bad I was thinking of buying aftermarket door shells. Has anybody used these and how did they work out?

they have improved drastically since the 80's. they still aren't as good as the gm ones but at a forth the price, I can do a little work...

I bought aftermarket doors (not installed yet) due to price also.
I plan on spraying the inside with rubberized under coating then use liquid nails and cut 1" thick Styrofoam insulation to glue to the inner outside surface.
I believe doing this will make for a more solid sounding door when closed.

I dislike aftermarket doors. My friend bought a set for his truck and they sound like beer cans (just like the after market fenders)and they dont fit right. He was able to find two rust free door to get redone to go on his truck(along with fenders). When hes done he will have an all original metal rust free truck.

If you plan to but better doors on id try to find originals that arent rusty.
Cant be too hard cause i even have an extra set and i live in one of the states were rust is common.

I went to the junkyard and got two nice doors when I had my 76,....found that was the cheapest way 40 bux per huah!?

My truck had aftermarket door skins, which were already installed when I got the truck. The driver door skin doesn't line up for ****! Towards the bottom of the door you can see how it doesn't follow the same curve of the cab of the truck.

The passenger side door also has a slight warp to it. It's not too noticable, but with the right paint it would be. I was told by my buddy who is a body guy, that both these doors were skinned, and that's why they don't line up too well.

Saw a set of aftermarket doors on a truck a few months ago at a body shop...I don't know what "brand" but the fit was an eyesore, I would have been embarrassed to have the ones this guy had. Others may have had better luck.

We had some cheapo's on our old 76, got em off another truck. They do sound thin and hollow when you shut them but IMO if you don't have a junkyard with truck parts or a means to travel out of state like me or far away in the same state, aftermarket is the way to go.

As some said they require work to adjust and make fit right, but I've ran into some they just got thrown on and fit perfect.

Only problem our aftermarket doors had was someone used the old gm weatherstrip for windows and left the windo tracks out so they didn't roll up for s$%^ they'd come off track and you'd have to guide them up.

The fit was nice, body lines lined up very good, front and rear without much work at all, and the contrours fit very well. Only way I knew they were japan's or foreign was to have them off the truck and packing them since they are lighter, and when you'd shut them.

So again if you can't find any local for a good deal I'd get some aftermarket ones. Going with gm stuff is always better and great, but alot of the time you just can't find them, or can't get to them.

do you think tri-plus is the best way to go. ive heard many good things about tri-plus or 'goodmark'. i'll see what a set will cost me down at vocational school. ive searched high and low around here and cant find any good originals. so the next best option is repops.

I don't know about doors but I remember seeing online this company selling fenders, and one was a little more then the other. I asked them why and they said one's a certified restoration part or something, some kind of stamp/sticker or whatever and bottom line said it was a better quality part and helped it fit better and line up better right out of the box.

I think heck yea repop stuff is good if you can't find originals and I've heard goodmark was one of the best as far as replacement parts.

Tri-Plus is one of the good products. That is what Goodmark sells.
If the doors didn't come on the truck, you are going to be doing some alignment regardless of where they came from, aftermarket or used.

Crhis is right for sure, my monte carlo had the front clip changed and it was another 85 sc from a junkyard and it didn't line up right. it was same year and it was gm stuff original and still had to shim and align it.

I think all cars have shimes my chevelle had never taken apart and it had shims.

Yea if you like dynamat check on ebay for cheaper ones like fatmat and edead, they are the same stuff but alot cheaper then the dynamat.

Oh yea factory vehicles have shims our 84 has them all over for the fender. I just meant you'll maybe need to add more or take away in certain areas when you install another piece that wasn't original to that truck.
