Shock Relocation

Im sure a few of you have done this with a kit. My question, how did you get the old mounts off without taking the bed off? Used my 4.5 inch grinder and lowered my exhaust and I have one side off, but now how do I get the old rivets out?

Grind them flush & drive them out w/a air chisel (easy way ) or a punch & hammer (not so easy).

I was trying not to grind them out, getting lazy. Going on 3 weeks doing this install. Nver enough time in the day.

I used a center punch to ding the rivit head in the center, then a 3/8 drill bit to drill through the head. Then punch the rivit out with a punch and bfh

Get a flap wheel for your grinder at Home Depot and you'll be able to grind those flush in about 30 seconds each. Then, like mentioned, they will punch right out.

Also, fit a block of wood between the flange of that crossmember and the bottom of the bed, right next to the rivet while hitting the rivet. The crossmember is flimsy enough that it springs a bit when struck with the hammer and than takes away from the effectiveness of your force.

If you have an air hammer use a chisel bit and knock the head off of it then use the air hammer to knock the rest of it out, not the quietest way but for me it has been by far the simplist.

That was the first thing I tried, my air hammer did not make a dent.
So I used the grinder. Just have to get back under it, and finish the job.

Got the old shock mounts and installed the new ones. Unless I did something wrong, the new shock relocator parts are not as great as I thought. I'll post the pictures within the hour.

Are the shocks bushings supposed to be slanted at the bottom?
Also the kit has a mounting bolt that hits the shock as you can see in the picture. You have to install the upper screw with the nut half way then install the shock then tighten the screw the rest of the way. PIA!!

Flip that upper bolt over to where the head is on bottom and the nut is above the crossmember. That will fix that problem at least.

Do you have an adjustable panhard bar? Looks like your rearend is misaligned.

My lower shock mount kit from ECE has a spacer between the shock and the mount. Don't know if that would solve the mis-alignment problem though. I'll take a pic tonight when I get home and post it for you.

What does the other side look like? Can you post pics of the opposite side? If we could see how that shock sits on the mounting stud, that would tell us alot.....

Looking at PunkRocks pictures, I think my shock mounts were made wrong. His mounting bolt is nowhere near the shock where as mine hits the top of the shock.

There are definately some difference here, but nothing is jumping out at me right now except for the rear end not being centeres. VDOG, some pics of the left side would tell us a bunch.

Also VDOG, who made your kit? And how much is your truck lowered in the rear?

I will get you a picture of the passenger side in a few minutes. I got mine from Classic Performance Parts or CPP.
Look at the screw that in the old shock mount hole. Do you see it next to the shock? Its pressing against the shock.

vdog- the part that your bottom mount attaches to looks bent to the left. Look at the angle compared to punkrocks!.

The truck has a 3" drop in fron and a 4" in the rear.
Maybe I should install the panhard bar, maybe that will align the shocks.
So where do I mount the adjustable part of the panhard bar? On the axle or on the driverside mount?

Pictures are the driverside of the truck as requsted.

i'm not sure why your having the issues you are, but i would definitely run a panhard bar. at least the factory one, if not an adjustable one.

all of the adjustable panhard bar setups i've seen has the adjuster on the D side mount.
