Be sure to coat them with a metal protectant to keep the dirt out of the pores of the aluminum. I use stuff from "Wizards" and it works great. I used to have another brand, but since I handle the "wizards products", I started using theirs. It is worth the price of a bottle.

Oh man I know what you mean, I have some nice billet specialties chevy powr ones on my monte carlo and thoose are always looking bad, polishing them sucks for sure.
What do you use? I've had decent luck using rubbing compound, and the mag/aluminum polish in the little tubs, then followed with wax to try and keep it that way and protect it.

I have a set of chrome valve cover collecting dust. My new engine has center bolt covers so I can't use them. I thought about billets but they are not worth the trouble. Have you tried to coat them with a good wax?

I spent a little money and purchased some small buffing wheels for my die grinder. They are called "razor buffs". These are about 3" to 4" in diameter and work well with a tapered spindle on the grinder. Those things with a couple of the polishing bricks can clean up a wheel or valve covers in no time. I did four American Racing wheels awhile back in 2 1/2 hours. These things are small enough to use just about anywhere.

iv heard froma friend that after you polish aluminum you can spray some kinda sealer over it to stop tarnishing . any ideas

There are all kinds of ideas. Spray clear coat paint, use the ZOOPS sealant, use car wax, etc.. I have the ZOOPS sealer at my home and I have yet to go out and try it. The metal has to be polished washed and wiped clean, then mix this stuff with demineralized water and treat the metal. I have started cleaning my stuff with mothers aluminum poish and finsihing with the Mother's Billet polish (to get a mirror finish), then I use the metal sealant that I mentioned above theat I get from "Wizards". IT does not last forever, but I get more than a year out of my engine parts and the wheels that I work on are good for a whole year's time. I do not have large investment in this either.

I fixed this problem on my engine for the 68. I got tired of polishing all the time. Now I'll just wipe it all off with a damp towel with every wash.
