Can you weld aluminum grills.

Hey all. My outer grill on the truck has a smashed driverside part. The rest of the grill is in great condition. If I bought a trashed outer grill with a good driverside, could the 2 be welded together?. Maybe put the seam at dead center (on the peak) so it wouldn't be so noticable? Has anyone tried this??
I am not sure if I want a repop because of the fitment issues, so i'm trying to brainstorm a little. Maybe even chrome it afterwards?

as thin as a grill shell is the welder must be very skilled , but it can be done. and you can even get it chromed if you dont mind the thousand or so that it'll cost you

Re: Can you weld aluminum grills.

You might try that "Alumaloy" stuff, or Northern Tool has something similar called "Alumi-Pro". you just use a Propane torch. I used it on my jon boat and it works just like they claim. I have the "Pro" stuff. As for it being thin, on my boat it was worn thin from beaching it and had no problems with that issue. Costs $15 at Northern. and you don't have to buy 1lb, Northern is a half pound.

Re: Can you weld aluminum grills.

Wes,
Thank you, but spendy is right.I would be afraid to get a bug on it! I will leave those to the people doing perfect show restos. I'll stick to something I can drive 80 mph through the gnats, bees and lovebugs without having heart failure. They are nice though!!

Re: Can you weld aluminum grills.

I was trying for awhile to find a piece to replace part of the drivers side of mine - I was going to experiment on it - didn't have any luck though - either all were in good shape or trashed and tossed.... It seemed like every truck that was getting parted out had the same area messed up.

Re: Can you weld aluminum grills.

Be VERY selective if you have it welded. I've been welded aluminum for years and if you get a person who thinks you can weld it like steel, well you might as well try to find a new one. Also if you have it welded have it tigged instead of migged. If your planning on having it chromed you won't have to worry about the gas holes.
