Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
I bought some new door seals and I wanted to know if anyone has any wisdom they would like to pass on before I start. Such as , the best way to remove the old ones without ruining my paint. What works best for cleaning off the old glue. What to glue the new ones in with. How to hold the new ones in til the glue dries. Would it help if I drink a beer before I start or after I'm done? Feel free to jump in with any suggestions or comments! Thanks!

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
I put some new glue on ones on my 71 with 3m glue but they still come off. I've heard that the push on ones from GMCPauls is the way to go. I ordered a set a while ago but they are back ordered so I don't have them yet. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
The trick to using the 3M weatherstrip adhesive is to put a thin coat on both items (on cab and on weatherstripping, and on both sides of each) let it cure for several minutes, then install the weather stripping. With it on both surfaces it will stick to itself, it needs to be tacky, not wet for it to work. I've done this doing several foot sections. I used vise grips to hold tricky areas (like the sharp angle at the front of the cab.)
Can't help with glue removal.

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
I used black weatherstrip glue, I think it was 3M too. Put it on both sides of the weatherstripping and the door and let it sit for a few minutes, then start on the sharp upper corner of the door and work your way around. Do it in about one or two foot sections and hold it while it dries.

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
I purchased the push-on type door seals from GMCPauls, worked great! Highly recommend them to anyone needing new ones.

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
No easy way to get the stock / old ones off. Use a hard plastic putty knife or plastic gasket scraper to help. It sucks kind of no matter what. Once you have the old one off..I used a skill knife to carefully cut/scrape the glue w/o getitng into the paint so that it was all mostly smooth. Do what people say above..but rather than holding the weatherstrip while it dries, get painter's tape at home depot. Tear off about (10) 2' strips of it, stick them on the seat/door panel so they're handy. As you apply the weather strip, you can use the tape to hold it in place as you work your way around. Let it set up good for about 15 minutes or so, carefully pull the tape and shut the door. Leave it be overnight..or I did. Perfect install, looks stock as a rock.

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
I just did this, can't help with removing, mine had been off for years. I agree with Ozona, I used the painter's tape. Except I might have used a lot more than 10 pieces I did smear the 3m weather strip, in a couple of places where is shows, but some goo-be-gone, and a lot of rubbing got rid of it. Worked great, looks great. Just get ready to having to start really slamming your doors!

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
3M makes a product called "Adhesive Cleaner" that sort of softens the old glue. However, you have to be very patient with it and the fumes are pretty nasty. I ended up using it on one door, but then one of the other ones wasn't so bad and I just gently scraped the residue off and applied the new glue (3M black weatherstrip adhesive--not the super version).

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
I used a ton of spring loaded clothes pins for the glue on type but the best way is to go with the S-10 push on weatherstrip style.

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
You can take an awl and poke air relief holes every 6" and it should help a little. Learned this trick from member Bill Athey!

Re: Door seal replacement,Tips Help?
You can lower the window a tad when closing the door from the inside to make it shut easier then roll it up. It'll be differrent for a while.
