Question Older Body on Newer Frame

Hello All, I am new to the Board and wondered if anyone has info regarding putting a 67-72 body onto a 78 frame. Any help would be appreciated. Dave

Re: Older Body on Newer Frame

Most just swap the suspension due the differences in the frame.

Re: Older Body on Newer Frame

Swap can be done with a few mods, but the biggest problem is the difference in wheelbase and the way the frame bends at the rear of the cab. On a 4x4 you can do a body lift and get around it some, but it doesn't look right on 2wd (to me). On SWB models the newer is 1" longer and I think the LWB is also an inch longer in wheelbase. It can be worked out but, may not be worth the effort since you can do a quick and easy suspenison swap between the frames.

Re: Older Body on Newer Frame

Hi Dave...welcome from Utah. Where ya at?

If you do this successfully...it would make a great FAQ.

I know the the frame of the 73-87 is very similar to the 67-72 frame...if not identical.

Anyone else?

Re: Older Body on Newer Frame

ya ive done this we put a 1970 gmc 2wd pickup on a 1991 chevy 4x4 suburban had to secton the frame and build every mount and reposition every thing we used the efi motor and computer wire harness and stering colum and dash cluster out of a burb. we are almost finished with this swap but i went to get tags for it and they said i had to have it inspected i did then they said i had to send all my info in to the state and get a bulders title taking at least 4 months which really sucks cause i cant drive it at all. so make sure u put the title in to mind i dont know what the laws are in utah but here in colorado they are pretty strict the vins have to mach the the motor frame and body wich mine didnt so he i am in high school watin till i get a nice letter from the state sayin i got a cleared title wohoo then i can get tags hears a recent pic

What he said about the title. Check it out first beefore you start. Otherwise it's not a big deal if you can weld a little and use a torch. I can give ya some tips if you decide to do this. Glad to have you here. BTW. The guy that built my 383 stroker is a huge Ford fanatic........

Re: Older Body on Newer Frame

This is proof that old Fords and old GMC's can play nice together. To top it off my '68 is on a '92 GMC 3500 chassis. If you need any help let me know. Mine was easy as we modified the cab while we where stretching it to match the cab mounts on the '92 frame.

Hey 68gmcdually.

Got a FAQ on that one...that is cool. I had always wondered about a 72 stretch cab.

Re: Older Body on Newer Frame

Actually, the Title laws in Utah aren't all that bad. I built a 74/77 Ford Highboy and all I had to do was take pics of both trucks...the 74 was the 4x4...the 77 was the 4x2 and surrender both titles to the DMV...then drive the vehicle to the DMV...they inspect it....u drill 2 holes in the door post and they rivet a new VIN number to the cab and the new title shows up in the mail in about 3 weeks. Re: Older Body on Newer Frame

My brother in law put a 67 on a 76 frame it turned out pretty nice. He had to move the body mounts around and he picked up a body lift for it and cut some of them down it was a pain but worth it. The dmv let him tittle it as the 67.
