Front Gear Change Question
I've got a '90 K-10 stepside.
When I bought it the 4" lift kit was already done. The lift was professionally installed by a company in Denver. The previous owner didn't change the gears for the taller tires. It still has the original 3:42 in the rear and matching in the front so it has a lot of top end speed but it's really kind of a dog when I want to pull a trailer. I've rebuilt Ford 9" race differentials, and am rebuilding a Mopar 8 3/4 differential right now. Question... With moderate mechanical ability, should I attempt to replace the front and rear gears in my 4X4 or take it to a shop? I've never been into the front axle of any 4X4. Here are a couple pics.

D-I-Y is a good way to learn. The 10bolt rear is easy. The front is more involved but there are plenty of how-to books and knowledgeable fellers on this site. Maybe get your hands on an exploded diagram with tech and specs of the front diff. Labor costs will be close to $400 or more for the front end alone. Roughly $200 for the rear. Do it yourself and you can spend that money on all new seals, bearings, etc if necessary plus you'll have the knowledge to fix it in the field if you break something.
