Camel hump heads, good price?

I know a guy with a set of reconditioned camel humps. He said they have big valves in them and are ported and polished. Complete heads, assembled. Never ran since the machine work. They've sat for 3 years since the machine work. He said he would sell them to me for $400. How much of a gain are these heads over a factory 72 head?

They won't have accessory holes, do you have AC or power steering in your truck?

I guess that is a fair enough price, but there are a lot better aftermarket heads available now (if performance is what you are after). If nothing else, buy them to resale, they go crazy for them on flea bay.

Re: Camel hump heads, good price?

Hmm...I guess I need to get the casting number and see what they are. He said they have accessory holes.

If I had a bit more money, I'd go with Summit's 2.02/1.60 Vortec heads...which I should go that way anyway since that's just $250 more...

Edit...I just looked on ebay, and these don't seem to bring near what I thought they did..I believe I'll scratch this idea.

I have seen many that are rebuilt and never use that end up having cracks and such..

If you like the vintage power scene and to have bragging rights, go for it, but get them checked by a pro prior to purchasing. If they are as good as he says, shouldnt be an issue. (have they been sitting for a couple years with springs and valves in them? thats a warning sign..

Re: Camel hump heads, good price?

Some of the factory camel hump heads had accessory holes 186's do just off the top of my head.

Not a bad price but, IMO if you buying them to run on a driver go after market. There are other upgrades usually needed on these heads other than a basic rebuild. hardened seats need to be installed as factory camel humps don't have them.

Yep, if they have accessory holes then they are 186 heads and $400 is a steal for them if they are completely redone and ready to bolt on. They could fetch more elsewhere if you know what I mean.

Re: Camel hump heads, good price?

400 sounds like a hell of a deal for fully rebuilt heads however if the springs have been sitting in them for 3years unmoved then chances are they arent gona be very good now, but i dont see why you still cant run them, after all theres vehicles out there that sit for more than 3 years and start up and drive around just as good as when they were parked

and btw i have 487x camel hump heads with accesory holes
