rubber hood stiffeners-replacing?

when i got my new hood hinges/springs,i ordered a complete set of rubber sponge hood stiffeners that go on the under-side of your hood to keep hood from rattlin'.anyone got a tip on how to keep from scratchin' the paint when you remove the old crusty ones?seems a flat gasket scraper would do the trick, but maybe someone has done this and learned by trial and error! whatcha think?
