changing steering stop

How much should I cut off?

Got my '85 spindles on the 70, and like I read on here, the steering stop won't let it turn all the way. I haven't attached the tie-rods yet. I plan on cutting the stops down. There is about an inch difference from the tie-rod and its location on the spindle. I would think you would want the spindle to stop before the steering box stops turning.

Any suggestions before I start cutting would be helpful.

Sorry that it took me so long to get back to you, not enough hours in the day. I have been looking at this real hard and the spindle/ control arm from the disc and from the drum are just so different that I think that I would just try and find a set of lower control arms from the '85 and put them in. The stops on the drum lower arms are pretty much rectangular and straight up from the arm, the stop on the disc arm has a tab welded on the spindle edge of the stop. The spindles are set up different as well. The stops on the spindles both pertrude from the inside face of the spindle about 2.5", but they look completely different. I really think that if you can find the right set of arms you should just take the bite for a new set of lower ball joints and put them in. Good luck, Lane.

Thanks for the effort, but I think I will keep the lower control arms and new balljoints. Almost took the ones off the donor chassis, just because.

Guess I'll have to put my head in a vise and sandblast the rust off the old geometry. Gotta have something to do with different ...trial and error methods.

Maybe I'll go to the pick-n-pull and try some measurements while I'm there.

Trial and error is the method I will be using this weekend to do the same thing. I am thinking that I can get some measurments from the old spindle, at least to get in the ball park. Tell you what, you keep me posted, and I'll keep you posted

Sounds like a plan

Was planning on getting mine alligned, so everything at least started in an equal position on each side. Pop the outers out again (should not change the alignment). Then just slowly start grinding until the stop hits before the box stops turning. Grind, loosely install tierod...repeat as necessary. followed by

Might even go as far as making a patern of the first side to make the other side a little easier and faster.

Course that is if the &^$&^#$@ing rain will stop so I can get the brakes finished in the first place.
