80 GMC K20 Hydroboost?

I'm wanting to convert my truck to hydroboost. Will my stock 80 pump work? Steering box? I've converted it to disc's in the rear so I know I need a new master cylinder setup. Was thinking I'd go to the boneyard and get the mc/hydroboost combo, but wasn't sure if I needed the pump and box also.

Thinking I'm gonna do a hydralic clutch while I'm at it

any input would be very helpful.

No box difference. You can use your pump, but it will need an additional return port. Don't just put in a tee, drill a hole and weld in another port. It would be easier just to use the donor pump if it is correct for your brackets.

Re: 80 GMC K20 Hydroboost?

I used the pump off of the donor van because it has about twice the fluid capacity. The hydroboost has metric fittings and my steering box was standard thread so i had to change the pressure line from booster to half metric and standard. Overall it was an easy swap, and braking performance increased dramatically.

Re: 80 GMC K20 Hydroboost?

I put hydroboost in my C10, but since I used an '80s diesel truck as a donor I ran into problems with the pressure lines - the ports in my steering box and pump required flared lines, while the donor lines were push-in and o-ring style. Cut the lines, flared, good to go. I used the stock nuts, but the donor ones would work too. Only thing is now my damn hydroboost is leaking around teh pedal rod upon release of brake pedal, are these units serviceable?

with either a 15/16" or 1" wrench, you couldve swapped the pressure line fitting in the back of the pump and saved the hassle.

I should have been clearer in my original post. The fittings from the PUMP to the Hydroboost were fine, and I was able to use the factory hose.

The Hose I had to change was from the Hydroboost to the steering box.

The Hydroboost is metric and my steering box is standard flare. I could have gone with a newer metric psbox and wouldn't have had to modify anything, but my psbox is tight so I decided to keep it and just modify the hose.

Nick

Re: 80 GMC K20 Hydroboost?

I think the hyd. clutch on a full size started in '86. Not sure on the hydraboost- maybe around '77. You can find it on HD 3/4 tons & 1 tons. All diesel Chevys & GMC's have it. Even diesel Blazers.
