Timing should be set at........?

Hello there guys. I'm usually at the 60-66, but I have a question.

My cousing drove down from Nevada City with his 69 C-10 with a 307 with 2BRL

I installed a NEW HEI to replace his points dist.

What should the timing be at ? 10-12 BTC or what ?

My Craftman timing gun that I've had since I was 14 (35 now) finally broke...so I'm going shopping today.

The truck is running, but a little too advanced (pinging)

Thanks for your help

John

Re: Timing should be set at........?

I am not sure of your altitude, but here at 6000ft I set mine with after market cams as far advanced as I can, till they ping then back them off a bit. Some engines I have built here run 40-50 deg. advanced. My rule of thumb with after market cam is as far advanced as you can go. It may be different where you are though. Up here throw out the timing light and do it by ear and feel. Where it runs the best.

Re: Timing should be set at........?

as stated before ussually you advance the timing until you get spark knock or it kicks back on the starter, then back off a few degrees
