gchemist, I was looking at yer spark plug wires at the distributor, you have some of them cross each other at 90* angle - that's a major no-no, having two wires cross each other at a right angle means when one is firing it will induce current in the other, causing a misfire. Get some longer wires so you can start them off parallel to each other, and then just bend them 180* so they go to the right spark plug.

kinda gettin off on a different subject here.but the wire route point ivan brings up has always intrested me.iv'e heard some talk about crossfire/misfires and then others say it doesn't make any difference.while i tend to agree it could happen.iv'e seen alot of good running engines with crossed up wire paths.it certainly makes sense when ivan describes it.by the way i couldn't find g chemist's pic of distributor you were talking about.

Re: Engine removal day #2

Well my understanding is that Chevy engines don't like crossing them wires like that, my truck has always had them smooth and parallel so I can't say nothing from my personal experience.

Re: Engine removal day #2

Come on guys ya know me better than that. The wires crossed while pulling the parts off the front end. I'm thinking of buying the correction cap that looks like the modern type. Ya know the wires run out of cap in the order of cylinders. Costs $65 though!! I'll have to wait and see how much clearance the new intake will leave between the HEI and RAM Air box.

You know, I never understood how exactly that goes - does it have some internal wiring so that the order of the wire attachment differs from the order in which the rotor strikes the towers?

Re: Engine removal day #2

Here is version from Summit.
SUM-868836CR Costs $39.95 Peformance versions and later HEI versions cost more. The cap bolts directly to the stock HEI. The cap reroutes the firing order to match the cylinder squence. 1-3-5-7 & 2-4-6-8. It's an almost idiot proof for wire installation.

Re: Engine removal day #2

idiot proof and probably cleans the look up a lot. the way you have to wire up spark plugs to look decent always looked jumbled to me. oh well, good progress though, pull your bed and it'll look like my project. good luck,

later,

junk

Re: Engine removal day #2

I will be pulling the bed too. I need to install some 4" leafs. The rear frame and rear axle and bed underside will get painted!! Pulling the bed will be the last thing I do before putting the truck back on the street.

Re: Engine removal day #2

gchemist, for some reason I could not find the HEI version of that cap, all of the m "corrected" ones I saw require an external coil. Can you post a link to an HEI cap of that style?

The part number he posted, SUM-868836CR, says it is for HEI. If you are assuming the one posted is for an engine with an external coil because of the photo, note that the page says "Image is a representation of this part. Actual part may vary" under the photo.

If you buy one, let us know what you think about it. It does not say whether the wires are for over the valve cover or under the manifold routing.

Gotcha, thanks for the tip. I may call them soon to see how the situation is and buy one if money allows it...

Re: Engine removal day #2

The HEI cap states that it fits HEI up to 77. I guess they are listed to 77 since the ECM was introduced about that time. I see no reason why it would not work on a later model HEI. The HEI in my new crate motor does not have the connection for the ECM anyway.

Re: Engine removal day #2

Nice work man glad to see more progress.

Now I can't wait to see it all painted and under the bed/frame painted. I love doing that stuff.

On the correct-a-cap crap, I WANT ONE TOO!!!!!!

I too always wondered how the heck them things work. I love the fact of the clean look but wonder how they do it?
