Will this 5 speed hold up to 396?
Or is this a lighter tranny than they use with big V8's?
Thanks,

5 speed from S10 and Big block.... Disaster waiting to happen. The S10 tranny didn't take much from a built small block. If you want one I would look at ones from a 88 and up that came behind a V8 (NV3500 I believe is the tranny)

The NV 3500 also came behind 4.3 s-10 trucks as well as the full size trucks.
The tranny is the same regardless of big or small truck, shifter placement is the difference. I would not put this tranny behind a big block- too much torque.

Re: Will this 5 speed hold up to 396?
Most 28.V6 and 4 banger S10s came with the T5 tranny. Very weak. It even cam in some v8 cars, but didn't take much abuse. The NV3500 was the 1/2 ton 4.3 (S10 or fullsize) and some small block trannys. It does OK for general use behind a non-built V8 small block. The one I am thinking about came in the 3/4 ton& 4x4 V8 models normally (NV4500 I think). It will take more abuse and might work behind the big block just fine.

Re: Will this 5 speed hold up to 396?
If you want the manual tranny, overdrive and a big Block (all in the same vehicle), you'll probably have to upgrade to a Tremec 5 or 6 speed or similar setup to make the "fear factor" go away.
If memory serves, plan on contributing about $2.5K to the cause. For that amount or less, you could probably go with a beefed up TH700 and sleep better every night.

I was pretty sure of the answer when I asked. Thanks to all for the input.
