Opinions on Holley Avenger
My son is thinking about replacing his old Edelbrock with a Holley Street Avenger 670cfm on his mild 350 daily driver. Is this a reliable, maintenance free carb with good cold start manners? All comments will be appreciated.

My brother bought one of their Street Avengers for his 350 crate motor. He bolted it on and forgot about it. No adjustments were needed ... starts fine .... idles great.
But I have also heard horror stories from people who have "fine tuned" until they were blue in the face ... and still couldn't get them to run right .... Hope this helps ... Last edited by Shane; 12-03-2002 at 03:43 PM. |

Well
I just got one a month ago and still havent got it running right after talking to Holley and buying a new power valve. I sorta lost interest and its just been sitting out there. May be something sinple like choke or something. Fell on its face! Mine is the Off Road.

Buy another Carter or Edelbrock,or rebuild the Edelbrock they are simple carbs,cant beat the price.Holley good at race track.My opinion,some people swear by them,but i like to start up,and go.not wonder if its gonna idle right,or leak fuel.If you come to AZ again,ill show you were all my Holleys are.and they arent on motors.

Holleys leak sometimes and are a pain to tune but once you've tuned a few theyre like second nature. I'd say go with the 600 cfm model 4160. Theres not much difference between the avengers and the 4160 base model carbs and a electric choke 4160 goes for over $100 less . That quick change vacuum secondary isnt worth $100 .
I like edelbrocks. I have one on mine now but they dont react well to being parked on hills. I have to crank and crank in the morning as I am parked on a hill all night. Every edelbrock carb I have ever had was the same way on several different vehicles. The edelbrock is coming off soon and a 600 holley is going in its place. Ive also found I get better mileage with the holley.

My neighbor just installed that carb and Hates it. He's going to remove the electric choke because it's been nothing but trouble.

I agree with mikep. The 4160 eg. 600cfm vacuum secondary with electric choke is simple and cheap. One wire for the choke and your done. I've run all kinds of carbs and I know alot of people complain about the Holleys leaking. I've never had one leak in 16 years. The only reason they leak is people tend to over tighten the float bowl screws and accelerator pump screws. Holley also sells a great book. I've used it for years for trouble shooting.
Also the street avenger is not as easy to tune when it comes to the acceletor pump shot stuff. The carter/edelbrock is defianately no good on hills. Try one on a 4x4 and you'll give up real quick. And yes I've used the off road kit. You know the best bet is fuel injection. Have fun Terry

I helped my buddy install on on his 82 pickup w/ 350 last month. I couldn't talk him into an edelbrock he just had to have one. (He dosn't know much about carbs so I've been the one that messes with it.
It was very easy to set up and I havn't touched it since the day we put it on. I have seen huge improvements with cold starting (20F) and power. I have an older holley on the 68 and I hate it but the avenger has been a good carb fo him so far... Pete.
